News and Notes: Recent Results Around the Ivy League

Last night there were five games involving Ivy League teams. Penn was soundly defeated by Lafayette, 81-69, a Leopards team picked to finish in the lower half of the Patriot League by most preseason publications and picked last in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. While the Quakers are playing several freshman in the rotation, there is no excuse for Penn's poor play. The Quaker freshman have been inconsistent and have struggled stepping up like Cornell's freshman did a year ago. Moreover, Cornell and Penn are roughly comparable in experience as the Big Red have only senior on the roster (Jason Hartford) and only two juniors (Brian Kreefer and Jason Battle) in the playing rotation off the bench. The Quakers are only shooting 29% as a team from beyond the arc and under 70& from the free throw line after 7 games. Even with Penn a bit down in the dumps, the Quakers remain a title contender in the Ivy.

Yale also fell last night but to a very good Holy Cross team. However, the 21 point blowout defeat does not bode well for the Elis, even though they were missing starting center Matt Kyle. The Yale Daily News made reference to Cornell following Yale's loss to Holy Cross.

In other games, Brown lost to a mediocre Wagner team in Providence, while Harvard picked up a decent win against an improving New Hampshire program. Princeton also fell, losing by 10 points to Seton Hall.
