Jay Bilas of ESPN Picks Cornell for the Elite 8

Sunday night Jay Bilas announced that he was picking Cornell to advance to the Elite 8. The comment jolted reactions across twitterspace.
From Jeff Borzello of CollegeHoopsNet.com, "Bilas, we get it, you like Cornell...you must not be serious about the Elite Eight, though."

College Hoops Journal, "Jay Bilas has Cornell in the Elite 8. No way that's happening. No FREAKING way."

Jon Tannenwald, Philly.com, "Jay Bilas has Cornell beating Kentucky?"

BleacherReport.com, "Really Bilas? Cornell to the Elite Eight?"

Northstar Basketball, "Jay Bilas is insane. Cornell in the Elite Eight?"
  • ESPN's Eamonn Brennan writes during an ESPN chat session, "Temple with a No. 5 seed, will play Cornell as the No. 12. I would not be happy, were I a Temple fan. Cornell deserves a higher seed too, but I think Temple has the bigger gripe here."
Below, ESPN's analysts break down the East Region of the NCAA Tournament bracket...

In Bilas's defense, the media picks chalk all the time. So of course everyone acts like his pick is a travesty.

Did you know that Cornell is the only University in the World that has a unbeaten BB record against Kentucky? We won in 1966 at Rupp arena, when Gregg Morris scored 37 and held Louis Dampier under his average. 1 - 0 Cornell. Go Big Red!

Unlike Jay Bilas, this KY fan is SMART enough not to make an insulting comment about Cornell basketball. In March Madness, anything is possible. But, in regards to his dumb statement about "picking the smart kids", I just have a couple of comments: First, I think he just took himself out of the SMART category. Second, KY fans know that Jay Bilas doesn't like UK so nothing that comes out of his mouth surprises us. Most of us learned long ago to ignore him. Just look at his track record and you'll understand why.

Good Luck, Cornell. I hope you have a great run but UK is on a mission. And for those with any doubt--our players are pretty darn smart! And of special note--Kudos to Patrick Patterson, who is graduating in 3 years as well as being a great basketball player.

I was fourteen when Cornell came into Memorial Coliseum in Lexington(not Rupp Arena) in December 1966. The Louisville Courier Journal had opined that the only question was the margin of the UK victory. After all, Rupp had most of his NCAA runner-up team back, which included Pat Riley and Louie Dampier. I don't think anyone recover from the shock for several months.

I was fourteeen when Cornell beat UK at Memorial Coliseum (not Rupp Arena)in December 1966. The Louisvlle Courier Journal had opined that the only question was the margin of the UK victory. That Rupp team was "the Runts" - no body over 6"5' which included the likes of Louie Dampier and Pat Riley. What a shock!
