News and Notes: Afternoon Edition

Above, a 1969 game program between Cornell and Ohio State at Cleveland Arena. Below, some afternoon news and notes...
  • lists Cornell's Ryan Wittman among the 78 Division I players during the last decade that topped the 2,000 career point plateau.
  • Two of Cornell's transfers, Max Groebe (UMass) and Mark Coury (Kentucky) had the opportunity during 2009-2010 to face their former teams. Unfortunately, Jeff Foote is out of eligibility and will miss the opportunity to face his former school, St. Bonaventure, next season. The Bonnies are on Cornell's projected 2010-2011 schedule.
  • Speaking of transfers, the Northfield Mount Hermon School announced via twitter that former Penn forward, Brian Fitzpatrick has visited Davidson and Bucknell. Fitzpatrick opted to leave the Penn program in March.
Q: What do you think you can take from your experience at St. Mary’s, a solid mid-major program you’ve helped build, and transfer it here?
A: That’s the model – obviously there’s a distinction between the BCS schools and mid-majors but Cornell proved it can be done in the Ivy League and what I’m taking from that is the belief we have in ourselves. It doesn’t matter what resources you have, you got a chance if you’re working hard and get good players that are committed, you got a chance to compete with anybody.

  • A source tell us that each of Cornell's announced recruits now have made their first semester deposits to the University. These recruits affirmed that despite the coaching changes, Cornell was still their first choice. As Ricky Norris said, "When you commit to an Ivy League school, you commit to so much more than the coach." Norris was Cornell recruit, Dwight Tarwater's head coach at the Webb School in Nashville. Cornell's new recruits include thus far:
* Dominic Scelfo G 6-1 180 New Orleans LA Jesuit HS
* Jake Matthews G 6-2 Greensburg PA Greensburg Salem HS
* Andrew Ferry G 6-2 Milwaukee WI Lutheran HS/Valparaiso Univ./Palm Beach St. CC (Junior)
* Jamal Cherry G 6-4 Tampa FL Tampa Prep HS (walk-on)
* Manny Sahota F 6-6 Bramton ONT Canada St. Marguerite d'Youville Secondary
* Dwight Tarwater F 6-6 Knoxville TN Webb School
* Anthony Gatlin F 6-8 190 Pearland HS TX/Centenary College (Junior)
* Nnamdi Okoye F 6-8 Concord CA De La Salle HS
