News and Notes: Saturday Edition

Above, a collage of Cornell programs from games against Penn and Princeton. Below, some news and notes...

The detour for Steve Albrecht came when Steve Donahue left Cornell for Boston College.

Albrecht, who had decided to transfer from Toledo in December after playing in just 11 games, was all set to join the Big Red until Donahue got the call from Boston College.

Almost immediately, Albrecht called Brown coach Jesse Agel to see what the Bears had to offer.

Albrecht returned from a visit last weekend sold on the school in Providence, R.I.

He'll start classes in the fall and if the NCAA grants him a waiver, it's possible he could play at the start of the season.

"Something just felt right about it," he said. "My gut was telling me to go there. The education speaks for itself. They have an up-and-coming team that is going to get better."

Albrecht knew that he could be on shaky ground with Cornell after it made it to the Sweet 16 before getting pummelled by Kentucky, because Donahue was a hot candidate for other jobs.

When he left, Donahue made Albrecht an offer he could pass on at Boston College.

He'd give Albrecht a scholarship if he was granted a waiver by the NCAA. Currently, Albrecht has to sit out next season to comply with transfer rules. There is a possibility that because of extenuating circumstances, (the abrupt resignation of Gene Cross and the fact that three other players left on their own), Albrecht could get a waiver.

"I just wasn't comfortable with that," he said of going to BC without a scholarship in hand.

Last year, Brown finished 11-20 overall and 5-9 in the Ivy League. Albrecht will be one of five new players on the roster for the Bears. He figures to get some quality playing time.

Albrecht averaged 11 points for Toledo before he left.

"They're bringing in some nice players," Albrecht said.

I love how writers put things like Cornell got pummelled by Kentucky. Ok we lost but we did not get killed! What game were they watching?
