News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, some news and notes...
  • This Is Plymouth writes about the signing of Cody Toppert (Cornell '05) by the Plymouth Raiders of England's BBL.
  • The Cornell Daily Sun notes some of the NBA workouts in which Ryan Wittman and Jeff Foote have participated. Foote has worked out twice for the Knicks and vists Portland today. Wittman has worked out for the Nets, Knicks, Kings and Wizards.
  • A history lesson and word of caution to college basketball journalists and fans writing off Cornell next season. Do not assume that simply because Cornell graduates several of the league's top players that the balance of the returning roster is lacking in star power. Past dominant Ivy teams have weathered such mass graduation losses and returned the following year as title contenders. For example, during the 1994-1995 season, Penn finished 22-6 (14-0) Ivy League. Like Cornell's current three-peat run, the end of the 1994-1995 season marked the Quakers' third consecutive title. Penn entered the 1995-1996 season labeled as "rebuilding" following the graduation of some of the greatest Ivy players of all time. The legendary senior class included All Ivy League stars-Jerome Allen, Matt Maloney, Eric Moore, Scott Kegler and Shawn Trice. Notwithstanding the loss of these five All-Ivy League players, the Quakers tied for the 1995-1996 Ivy League title. Lesson here: consider the returning and incoming personnel, not just the departed graduates.
