Below, some recruiting news from around the Ivy League. Above, an excerpt from Hoop Scoop's Rankings of the Nation's Top 100 High School Seniors for the Class of 1994. Included on the Top 100 was Cornell point guard, DeShawn Standard (Cornell '98).
BuffStampede.com reports that Collin Woods (Horizon HS) Phoenix, AZ, 6-1, G, has offers on the table from Cornell, Columbia, Fresno State, Colorado State, UTEP, San Diego, Portland, UC Irvine, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Cal State Northridge, Montana State, and Weber State. "[University of] Colorado is still recruiting Collin at this point. But he is not one of their top three [point guard targets], I know that. I think he is more like four or five," said Kathy Woods, his mom to BuffStampede.com. "I think he wants to go somewhere where he can play right away. So that might not be a good fit for him." She added, "I think the head coach at Cornell wanted to see him play, too." Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara are also showing interest. Woods will be taking an official visit to Portland at the beginning of October according to Scout.com. “That’s the only official visit we have lined up so far because we want to see what happens in September with the in-home visits and also with what kind of financial package comes in from the Ivy League schools,” said Woods' mother to Scout.com. “He has the test scores and the grades he needs, so we’re just waiting on the financial package.” Cornell, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara have all lined up in-home visits in September. "People have compared my style of play to Russell Westbrook and Darren Collison," Woods said. "I'm an athletic combo guard. I feel I am a good defender and I have the ability to create my own shot." Woods was named first-team all-state and was also the Player of the Year in his region this past season. He averaged 17.5 points, 3.9 rebounds. 3.1 assists and two steals per contest.
BuffStampede.com reports that one of the point guards that the Buffs have ahead of Woods on their wish-list for their Princeton-styled offense is Spencer Dinwiddie(Taft HS) Woodland Hills, CA, 6-4, G. He holds offers from Harvard, Santa Clara, Oregon, Colorado and UNLV. "I am a big point guard that loves to pass," said Dinwiddie when asked to describe his basketball skills. He has lined up a visit with Harvard for Sept. 17 and he plans to check out Oregon on Oct. 1. "I am going to take all five trips and then make my decision in November." UNLV, Colorado, Santa Clara, Stanford and Georgetown are the other colleges that Dinwiddie has thought about taking an official visit to this fall. The Colorado Buffaloes are also trying to lock him down on a date. But Harvard appears to be currently the front runner for his signature. "If they can put together the [financial aid] package that they're trying to put together then I will be very interested."
