ITHACA, N.Y. -- Members of several Cornell winter sports teams will be at Borders, located in the Shops at the Ithaca Mall, on Sunday, November 7, for a special community event starting at 1 p.m. Athletes from this year’s teams will be at Borders to meet the community and discuss the current sports season. Coaches will be at Borders to not only meet the public, but to announce the arrival of two books on last year’s tremendous Cornell winter sport session -- "Making History: March 18-21, 2010" highlights the record-setting performances and game-changing moments for the four Cornell winter sports teams and "A Blueprint For Success: Cornell Men’s Basketball 2009-2010."
MomentumMedia, a publishing company in Ithaca which specializes in high school and college sports books and magazines, is debuting "Making History: March 18-21, 2010" at the Borders event to help celebrate the greatest weekend in Cornell sports history to-date.
During the third weekend in March, 2010, Cornell University was at the pinnacle of the college sports world, competing for national championships and making headlines along the way. The Big Red wrestling team finished placed second at the NCAA Championships in Omaha - Cornell's highest finish ever, and the best ever for an Ivy League team. Four Big Red wrestlers earned All-American status for the sixth straight year. The women's hockey team made it to the Women's Frozen Four for the first time ever and won its semifinal game against top-seeded Mercyhurst before losing in three overtimes to Minnesota-Duluth in the championship game, the longest game ever in NCAA women's hockey championship history. The men's basketball team won its first-ever games in the NCAA Tournament, defeating major conference powers Temple and Wisconsin during the first and second round action of the NCAA Championships. The Big Red basketball squad became the first Ivy team since Penn in 1979 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the tournament. And in Albany, N.Y. that weekend, the men's hockey team won its first ECAC championship since 2005 by defeating Brown and Union in the semifinals and finals, respectively. The recently released "Blueprint For Success: Cornell Men's Basketball 2009-10" commemorates this record-setting season, taking you through the key stages of the year through the words of Jon Jaques, a senior captain on the team. This book contains many photos showing game action and post-game celebration, comments from Big Red players and coaches, and excerpts from articles written by national media.
Cornell Sports, Borders and MomentumMedia are looking to make this event fun for the community with a raffle which will have items from Cornell Sports, copies of the books, movie tickets from Regal Cinemas among the prizes, music from the pep band and a unique chance to meet the coaches and athletes from Cornell Sports. If you would like more information about this very special event, swing by Borders at the Shops at the Ithaca Mall and get an event flyer. Borders will begin reserving copies of "Making History" for those who go to their facebook page at facebook/Borders Ithaca and RSVP to the event.
“We might look like a big box store from the outside, but inside we’re committed to local events," said Lisa Hendricks, Sales Manager for the Ithaca Borders. "This particular November weekend, we’re hosting an Ithaca High School band legend on Saturday and on Sunday; we’re going red with the Cornell sports event. This very special community sports event not only shows support for the Cornell sports teams but also helps a local publishing company.”
