News and Notes: Tuesday Gameday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...
  • In case you missed it, in our Game Recap section, we posted the Cornell Daily Sun's late published recap of the Cornell-Boston University game from Saturday.
  • In recruiting news, several sources confirmed that John Golden (Northfield Mount Hermon School) Northfield, MA, 6-6, F, has committed to Dartmouth. Golden attended Cornell's elite camp last summer.
  • The Daily Princetonian ranks Cornell 7th in the Ivy League in its power rankings and notes, "No. 7 Cornell (2-4)-Cornell dominated the Ivy League last year en route to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tournament, but the losses of forward Ryan Wittman, last year’s Ivy League Player of the Year, and center Jeff Foote have hit the Big Red hard. The team started out strong with victories in two of its first three games but has since fallen in consecutive contests to St. Bonaventure, Lehigh and Boston University. Cornell’s defense has held opponents to an average of just 66 points per game, but the Big Red’s .380 field-goal percentage is lowest in the league."
  • While Cornell is currently sitting with a 2-4 record, the Big Red's last three games, 54-56 L vs. St. Bonaventure, 57-60 L at Lehigh, and 61-66 L at Boston U, were defeats by just a combined 10 points. During 2007-2008, the Big Red started the noncoference season with a similar sluggish 4-4 record, including a string of three straight losses to Colgate, Bucknell and Syracuse. The Big Red would ultimately finish the Ivy League season that year a perfect 14-0.
  • The A.P. notes of No. 15 ranked Minnesota, "Now they enter the soft part of their nonconference schedule, with games against Cornell, St. Joseph's, Eastern Kentucky, Akron and South Dakota State before starting the Big Ten schedule against Wisconsin on Dec. 28."
  • Inside The Hall previews Wednesday's Indiana-Boston College game and notes, "After a 15-16 season, an eighth-place finish in the ACC and failure to reach the postseason in 2009-2010, Boston College parted ways with Al Skinner and hired from Steve Donahue from Cornell. Donahue, who led the Big Red to the Sweet Sixteen in last year’s NCAA Tournament, returns four starters and six of BC’s top nine scorers from a season ago. Donahue’s run in March was impressive not only because of the teams he was able to knock off — No. 4-seed Temple and No. 5-seed Wisconsin — but also because it was the first time since 1979 that an Ivy League team played in the second weekend of the tournament. (You might remember Donahue, Ryan Wittman and the Big Red from the 2008-2009 season, when the eventual Ivy League champions fell to the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall for one of IU’s six wins.)"
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of November 30 is No. 230 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 192 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 160. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
