News and Notes: New Year's Edition

Below, some news and notes for New Year's...
  • Pictured above, Italian LegaDue team, Fulgor Libertas Forli announces its signing of Cody Toppert ('05). Toppert, who leaves the British Basketball League team, the Plymouth Raiders, will join Ryan Wittman ('10) at Forli. Toppert, one of Steve Donahue's first recruits, played one season in the NBA D-League following graduation.
  • Lead Scout.com analyst, Erric Bossi writes via Twitter on December 31 after watching Meridian (MS) against Rockdale County, "like Meridian's Devin Cherry. 6-2 senior PG. Good size and feel for the game." Cherry is a Cornell commitment.
  • ESPN's Dana O'Neil issues some humorous predictions for 2011... which includes a Harvard bust for more NCAA basketball violations.
  • The Daily Pennsylvanian lists its top 10 Penn sports moments of the year, including, "5. Men's hoops ousts No. 22 Cornell at the Palestra — Feb. 12-In a season with little to write home about, Penn men’s basketball gave the fans one memorable moment when the Quakers upset No. 22 Cornell — a team that went on to the NCAA sweet sixteen — handing the Big Red their only Ivy loss of the year. Then-sophomore Zack Rosen was moved to tears after the win — whether they were from joy or pain we may never know. Besides Rosen’s 22 points, Jack Eggleston had a career night for Penn with 24 points on 4-for-5 shooting from three. Of Penn’s six wins last season, this was by far the most memorable, as the Quakers faithful stormed the court. It was also Penn's first home win in nearly a year." Despite the defeat, Cornell went on to finish No. 17 in the country and clinched its third consecutive outright Ivy League title.
  • WVBR writes, "After dropping a heartbreaking contest to New Hampshire by two points yesterday, the Cornell Men's Basketball team finally broke an eight game losing streak today with an 86-80 victory Wofford. The hot shooting Red shot 64% from the floor and an incredible 15 of 21 (71.4%) from behind the arc, the second best single-game total in school history. Chris Wroblewski recorded a double double with 21 points and 12 assists, while Drew Ferry led all scorers with 25 points, including 7 three pointers. The win leaves Cornell at 3-9 as they return home on Monday to host Buffalo at Newman Arena."
  • Also on Cornell-Wofford, Hoopville writes:
The end result undoubtedly isn’t what Wofford hoped for in coming to the Holiday on the Hardwood Classic. Losing to VCU, the host team, was one thing, but losing to a Cornell team that had lost seven straight and in the fashion they did left head coach Mike Young with a simple way of summing up what the two nights in Richmond told him.“Not the way we wanted to go into league play, but that’s where we are,” said the veteran Wofford mentor after the 86-80 loss to the Big Red. “We have a good basketball team. We’ve got to get on the stick here.” Wofford has lost eight games this season, but Cornell is the first one that has come against a team with a sub-.500 record. But Thursday’s consolation game shed light on the biggest concern Young has with this group: defense. Cornell made 27 of their first 33 shots, an astounding clip, and at one point was 14-17 from three-point range for the game. Some credit has to go to the Big Red, but the Terriers came into the tournament allowing opponents to shoot over 46 percent from the field, so although this was isolated from the pure number standpoint, it wasn’t isolated entirely. “We should have a very good defensive team with many of the same players back from a year ago, but whether it be Georgetown, VCU, Clemson, Cornell, we are giving up an awfully high field goal percentage defense,” Young said. “We’ve got to get back to square one there, and we’ve got six days to do it.”
  • Hoopville writes after Wednesday's defeat to UNH, "Wednesday night’s semifinal games in the Holiday on the Hardwood Classic are in the books. New Hampshire won the first game 68-66 over Cornell, and will take on host VCU in the title game after the Rams beat Wofford 75-66. A few thoughts from Wednesday’s games: Cornell isn’t far away. The Big Red lost for the sixth time by five or fewer points, which means they’ve been right there. Cornell doesn’t have the star power of a year ago, but they do have veterans who have won like Chris Wroblewski (14 points, six assists), Errick Peck (game-high 19 points) and Adam Wire (team’s leading rebounder). But they’re all in different roles than before, an adjustment they haven’t quite made yet."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 1 is No. 228 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 201 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 207. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
