News and Notes: Sunday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Sunday...
  • Despite no nationally competitive team at the top of the league like Cornell from a year ago, the Ivy League's conference RPI is currently No. 11, ahead of higher profile leagues such as the Horizon (12), Missouri Valley (13), WAC (16), and WCC (17). More on Cornell's RPI, which jumped into the top 150 today, further down below.
  • The Daily Gopher writes, "After struggling defensively against the likes of St. Joseph's, Cornell and Virginia, the [Minnesota] Gophers finally clamped down on defense against the [Eastern Kentucky] Colonels" in a 71-58 win on Saturday.

Fans of the basketball program in the Ithaca area should not miss the opportunity to join the Cornell Rebounders Club. The next luncheon is Thursday, December 16 at the Ithaca Country Club.

  • The eight members of the Ivy League have now played at least 8 games each or roughly one-third of their respective schedules. Here is a look as to how we rank the Ivy teams based on their performances as of the close of Saturday evening. Note, this is not a projected league finish by The CBB, but a rank of the body-of-work already completed.
1. Yale
2. Harvard
3. Princeton
4. Cornell
5. Brown
6. Penn
7. Columbia
8. Dartmouth
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 12 is No. 146 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 182 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 163. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
