News and Notes: Afternoon Edition

Get all the information you need about Cornell's games this weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Thursday...

Above, highlights of incoming Cornell recruit, Shonn Miller's (St. Ignatius High School) Cleveland, OH, 6-6, F, 13 points and 10 rebound performance against Warren Harding on Saturday. St. Ignatius beat 11th ranked Harding and Cleveland State recruit, Tre Brown, 59-35.
  • Harvard is giving away free t-shirts for its "white out" showdown with Cornell on Saturday.
  • The Columbia Spectator's Michael Shapiro writes, "In a `column I wrote last semester addressing the issue of Ivy League athletic scholarships, I referred to Cornell’s remarkable run to the Sweet 16 round of the March Madness championship tournament as the “absolute pinnacle of success attainable for Ivy League schools.” Now I’m starting to reconsider, as Cornell hasn’t been the only “Cinderella” over the past few years. In fact, a number of surprising teams have emerged as legitimate contenders at the national level. Teams like Xavier—which, prior to 2004, had never made the Elite Eight and only appeared once in the Sweet 16—have become recurring forces in the NCAA Tournament. While Cornell and Xavier are just two notable examples, there has been a growing phenomenon of unexpected teams becoming national powerhouses. Is the only explanation just that, a bizarre phenomenon, or are there other factors at play? And, more importantly, does this yield any hope that this may be the year for the Lions? ...If Cornell’s Sweet 16 appearance was something more than your run-of-the-mill Cinderella story, why can’t this be the year for Columbia? After all, the Light Blue recently swept the Big Red to open the Ivy basketball season."
  • New York Magazine writes of Columbia, "Not bad, chaps! The Lions have won eight of their last nine, including a home-and-home sweep of Cornell over the last fortnight. They're in first place in the Ivy, which is important, because the Ivy League is that snotty conference that refuses to have a conference tournament. "

  • The Crimson writes, "After the Cornell men’s basketball team’s run to the Sweet Sixteen during March Madness last year, something dawned on Ivy League sports fans: the Ancient Eight’s guaranteed spot in the Big Dance is no longer a meaningless gesture. Nope. The Ivy League can play. And so, that lone tournament berth holds more promise this year than in recent memory. With eight Ivy League matchups in men’s basketball over the weekend, the hunt for the league title begins in earnest this weekend."
  • SportsBlastRadio.com of Boston writes, "With Cornell having a down year following a run to the Sweet 16, the [Harvard] Crimson under Tommy Amaker has beaten Colorado and BC on the road and nearly defeated Amaker’s former employer Michigan...This weekend they face a 2-0 Columbia and a Cornell squad, who despite a down year still has Chris Wrobleski and still coming off three conference titles."
  • The Daily Pennsylvanian's Brian Kotloff complains about Harvard's receipt of 1 vote in the A.P. Poll and writes, "With media darling Cornell now much weaker than last year, fans should know that the Ancient Eight puts out formidable teams each year. Who knows - maybe in a couple weeks Penn will be able to boast about beating a team that got an AP vote, thanks to Pete Gilbert."
  • While we can appreciate the blissful optimism and excitement generated from local media (especially the college "media") and fans of Ivy League basketball, just a harsh reminder -- it took more than 30 years for an Ivy League team to accomplish what the Big Red achieved last season. In what was considered the strongest year in mid-major college basketball history, Cornell finished the 2009-2010 season ranked No. 4 in the final CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 Poll and No. 17 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Cornell also received 6 votes in the final A.P. Poll, which was issued before the Big Red made its run through the NCAA Tournament to the Sweet 16, defeating two Top 25 teams (Temple and Wisconsin) along the way. Cornell received as many as 114 votes in the February 8 (week 13) A.P. Poll following the Big Red's narrow final minute defeat to Kansas. The Big Red's season was also highlighted by the nonconference wins at St. John's, at Alabama, at La Salle, at UMass, St. Joseph's, Davidson, at Drexel, at Bucknell, and Vermont. For those counting at home, the Big Red resume included 2 Top 25 wins, 3 wins over BCS teams, and a 4-0 record versus A-10 teams. Cornell's resume also included the MSG Holiday Festival Championship and the Legends Classic Philadelphia subregion championship with a 4-0 record in the tournament. No Ivy League team this season has come close to building this type of resume. Even the teams with quality BCS wins have largely done so over rebuilding power conference teams and from the cozy confines on their Ivy home court or in their hometown.
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 27 is No. 247 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 206 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 228 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
