News and Notes: Friday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Friday...

  • ESPN's Andy Katz profiles Harvard's rise into contention in the Ivy League and notes the competitiveness of the conference top-to-bottom. He writes, "Harvard had the unfortunate situation of climbing during [Steve] Donahue's Cornell rise while he was dominating the league for three straight seasons. That came after a back-and-forth, decade-long tussle between Penn and Princeton. As Cornell (3-10) has taken a plummet, Princeton (11-4) has ascended to its rightful place among the contenders under Sydney Johnson, with the expectation that Jerome Allen will have Penn a contender this season and for the foreseeable future. Yale, too, won at Boston College this season so the Bulldogs can hardly be dismissed while Kyle Smith is expected to ensure Columbia is competitive."
  • With the arrival of Cody Toppert ('05) as a recent acquisition by Forli in Italy's LegaDue, could the franchise be dealing Ryan Wittman ('10) to league rival, Tenzenis Verona? The fans site, ForliBasket (Google translation link) speculates on the possibility.
  • After's Eric Bossi raved about Devin Cherry (Meridian HS) Meridian, MS, 6-3, G, last weekend, Bossi referred to Cherry on Twitter as an "uncommitted" player still searching for a college. Of course, Bossi was incorrect. Bossi addressed the error over Twitter yesterday. He tweeted the following:
Wrote about a kid from Meridian (Miss.) High this weekend. 6-3 PG Devin Cherry. One of his coaches told me he's juco bound. Turns out Devin Cherry is as far away from juco bound as you can get. Cherry is all set to go to Cornell of the Ivy League. There had 2 have been a disconnect between coach, myself and who we thought we were discussing. Cherry a very, very nice pickup 4 Cornell. How can a coach (he was an asst/) think one of his players who is going Ivy League needs a juco? Wow. That's a first for me. I'm going to assume we just got mixed up about who we were talking about. Cherry is a solid mid-major prospect and a very good Ivy League pickup. Yeah, he's 4.0 student with near 30 ACT, clearly not in need of juco. MIxups happen! I probably didn't explain very well. Anyway, my apologies to Devin Cherry and the Cornell basketball program on the mixup. LOL.

  • This Sunday at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center, Cornell recruit Shonn Miller (St. Ignatius High School) Cleveland, OH, 6-6, F, will participate in the 12-team, six-game Villa Holiday Classic. Last weekend, Miller made his first return to the court at the National Jesuit Prep Classic, hosted by Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown Prep School, after missing the entire preseason with a foot injury. In previewing this weekend's Holiday Classic, the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes, "No. 17 St. Ignatius (3-4): The Wildcats lost two of three games to quality opponents in the Father George National Jesuit tournament in Washington. D.C., just after Christmas but coach Sean O'Toole believes his team played 10 outstanding quarters. The unexpected early return of Cornell recruit Shonn Miller from a foot injury is the best news the team could receive. Miller, a 6-6 senior, played a total of 20 minutes in D.C., scoring 15 points and getting 11 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team. He is expected to play tonight against University School and will try to play Sunday." The Plain Dealer also adds, "Assist to mailman: How unexpected was Shonn Miller's return to the St. Ignatius lineup while the Wildcats were playing in a tournament in Washington, D.C., last week? Surprising enough that coach Sean O'Toole had to have Athletic Director Rory Fitzpatrick send Miller's sneakers and uniform to the team's hotel by overnight mail."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 7 is No. 244 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the site ranks Cornell No. 213 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 224. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Blogmaster, is it just me or are the Big Red recruiting some incredible competitors?

Where do the next two classes put the Big Red as compared to other teams in the league?

These kids seem top notch.

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

Harvard probably has the best class...but Cornell has something Harvard does not.

Cornell added quality pieces at every position area and a bit more length.

Hard to argue that Cornell doesn't have the league's second best class.

Most impressive, Cornell put this class together in just 3 months. None of the '11 kids were Donahue recruits.

If Cornell can layer a high quality '12 class under the '11s, the Big Red will be back, very fast.

Hey, we're not gone yet, still an eight way tie for first place until tomorrow.......

One never knows, but these recruits seem battle tested at the lower level.

Courtney came here with a good recruiting reputation, and it looks like the staff logged in a lot of hours over the exam period etc.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

yeah definitely big props to Courtney for this recruiting class, he put together a quality 6 man class in a few months vs Penn who had a year and have only gotten 1 decent guy + we beat them out on Devin Cherry
