News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Monday...
  • ThisIsPlymouth (U.K.) writes on Cody Toppert's ('05) signing with Ryan Wittman's ('10) Forli team in the LegaDue of Italy.
  • In the high schools, Cornell recruit, Devin Cherry (Meridian HS) Meridian, MS, 6-3, G, was scouted by Scout.com's Eric Bossi at the City of the Palms Tournament. Bossi noted of Cherry, "[he is] a pretty good player...6-foot-3 point guard... has outstanding size, takes good care of the ball and does a solid job of involving his teammates. He's not a big scorer, but he looks like he could help out a mid-level program as a spring signee." Meridian is ranked No. 34 in the current ESPN Rise national high school basketball rankings. Meanwhile, fellow Cornell recruit, Dave LaMore (Dexter HS) Dexter, MI, 6-10, C, finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds on December 30 in a loss to Canton. Galal Cancer (Christian Brothers Academy) Albany, NY, 6-2, scored 13 points in the title game of the CBA Holiday Tournament over the weekend and was named tournament MVP after CBA defeated St. Peter's of Staten Island, 63-54. See the Albany Times Union Recap and the Troy Record Recap. The Times Union's Eric Medved scouted Cancer's game against Middletown last week and noted, "Cancer ... showed off a really nice move a couple times, a hop-step while gathering the ball in the lane (kinda like this)... Getting to the line is a big part of Cancer’s game, and he converts at a pretty good rate (75%)....Cancer, of course, plays much bigger than his height. I’m happy that he’ll be getting a great education [at Cornell], and I generally love to see Section 2 players do well at the next level, but I really, really don’t like the idea of seeing him play against us twice a year for Cornell. Cancer had a couple “holy crap” rebounds on the offensive end, finishing one with a putback in the third quarter. He also drew a clear charge in transition early in the fourth, and ran a rare postup late in the period, finishing over two taller defenders."
  • Jesse Kramer of the Bleacher Report ranks the conferences and writes of the Ivy League:

"17. Ivy League...46-46 (50.0) Last year the Ivy League was a top mid-major conference with Harvard and Cornell. This year, the Ivy League is still a mediocre conference. Harvard and Princeton are both strong mid-majors, but neither is as good as last year's Harvard or Cornell. Princeton is 10-4 with wins over Rutgers and Tulsa. Three of the Tigers' four losses have come by single digits. The double digit loss to No. 1 Duke. Harvard is 9-3 with a mediocre win over Colorado. Harvard can pick up another key OOC win in a game at Boston College in the first week of January. Since last year, Cornell has dropped tremendously. The Big Red are currently 3-9."

  • The Wilmington (N.C.) Star breaks down the CAA's season and notes, "Granted, Cornell (227) beat Delaware in the second game of the season. But the Blue Hens were playing without steady senior guard Brian Johnson, so it is excused."

The Big Red are back in action tonight (7 pm) at home against Buffalo.
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 3 is No. 229 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 204 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 209. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
