News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...

  • Cody Toppert ('05) signed this week with Forli of Italy's LegaDue and scored 8 points in his debut in an 88-73 defeat to San Severo on January 9. Above, Toppert pictured with Forli coach Giampaolo Di Lorenzo. Toppert, however, will not likely play with fellow Cornellian Ryan Wittman ('10), also currently under contract with Forli. Wittman did not play in Forli's January 9 game and is expected to depart the club in the short term and either sign with another European club (potentially Verona in LegaDue) or as some Italian media sources have speculated, could end up on an NBA D-League roster. Regardless of where Wittman ends up, Forli's management has kept its plans quiet.
Cornell 60, Stony Brook 52: Stony Brook shot 34.8 percent from the floor and 2-13 in dropping its second straight game on Saturday. It was a defensive struggle, with Cornell's Chris Wroblewski rising to the challenge in scoring 29 points, nearly half of the Big Red's points by himself. Bryan Dougher scored 12 points to lead Stony Brook and Dave Coley continued his strong play with 9 points and a team high 6 rebounds.
Big Red breakdown

* Cornell's Chris Wroblewski is back to taking care of the ball. In his first seven games, he committed 33 turnovers. In five games since, he has eight. He's also still the leading three-point shooter, by percentage, in Cornell history. After Saturday's 4-for-6 showing, he's hitting from deep at a .443 clip this season.

* In games where Aaron Osgood scores at least nine points, Cornell is 4-2.

* Errick Peck's string of seven consecutive games in double figures was snapped Saturday. Peck got in foul trouble early and scored six points. He did get a key offensive rebound with just over 3 minutes left. Cornell didn't capitalize, but it was 30 fewer seconds Stony Brook had to come back.

* Freshman guard Jake Matthews is making a push for playing time. The skinny 6-foot-2 guard from Pittsburgh played 14 minutes against Wofford on Dec. 30, and 15 in Saturday's win over Stony Brook. He didn't score in either game -- he's capable, but is clearly deferring to teammates -- but that's fine by the coaching staff. Matthews' defense and decision-making have been sound. He hasn't turned the ball over in his last 33-plus minutes.

"The first thing for me is to have a defensive mind," Matthews said. "Defensively, lock in every single play, and as soon as I come off the bench, just bring a tremendous amount of energy. Coach always tells us, work hard on defense every play and the offense will come."

* Eitan Chemerinski, the 6-foot-8 sophomore forward known more for his mastery of the Rubik's Cube and general academic brilliance than in-game contributions, saw his first meaningful minutes of the season against Stony Brook. He played four minutes in the first half, played hard, didn't make any noticeable mistakes and blocked one shot that the crowd at Newman Arena ate up.

It may not be the last time you see him, either.

"He's been doing it in practice," Courtney said. "He's been working his tail off in practice, working extremely hard."

Unorthodox best describes Chemerinski's on-court gait and style. But time and again in practice, he makes a play you never see coming. He makes quick decisions on the move, and gets to rebounds faster than probably anyone on Cornell's roster. He's still growing out his frame, which is listed at 205 pounds. But he's improving.

"In practice we call him Sir Slippery, and now he's getting stronger and he's basically unstoppable," Wroblewski said. "He does so many shot fakes and gets to the rim. He was killing us all week (in practice), so he was helping."

Ivy notes

* File this under "Go Figure:" In his first season as coach at Boston College, Steve Donahue has a win against at least one team from each of the six power conferences, and after Saturday's win over Georgia Tech, a 12-4 overall record. Against the Ivy League? He's 0-2.

Harvard beat the Eagles on Wednesday, 78-69. It was the third straight win for Tommy Amaker's club against BC.

* Harvard opened Ivy men's play Saturday with a 68-53 win at Dartmouth. No surprise on the women's side either -- defending champion Princeton got the better of Penn, 56-45.

* Columbia had a little trouble with Division III Union on Saturday. The teams were tied at 41 midway through the second half before the Lions (9-5) went on a 10-0 run. Final score was 64-59.
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 11 is No. 243 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 211 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 224. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
