News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about Cornell's game tonight at Yale and visit to Brown on Saturday with with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and note for Friday.

  • Incoming Cornell recruit, Galal Cancer (Christian Brothers Academy) Albany, NY, was not asked to do much in CBA's dominating 70-41 win over Schenectady last night. Cancer chipped in 9 points and was not asked to play much in the 2nd half for CBA, the No. 3 ranked team in the state. A recap is in the Albany Times Union.
  • Bloomberg writes, "Harvard, established in 1636, started a men’s basketball team in 1900-01, and didn’t field squads from 1909 to 1920. Its best start was in 1945-46, when it was 19-3 and went to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. Since then, their best Ivy finish was second place with an 11-3 league record in 1970-71, and they finished third last season. In the 54 years the Ivy League has been naming a men’s basketball champion, Princeton and Philadelphia-based Penn have each won at least a share of the title 25 times, followed by Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, with four each; Dartmouth University in Hanover, New Hampshire, with two; and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Columbia University in New York City with one apiece... Cornell reached the third round of the NCAA tournament last season after winning its third straight Ivy League title. The league doesn’t give athletic scholarships, determines its champion without a postseason tournament and never has had more than one representative in the national championship field."
  • Previewing tonight's Harvard at Princeton game, the Crimson writes, "This year, with Cornell out of the picture after losing its three stars and coach, the Tigers emerged as the preseason No. 1, and have not disappointed to date."
  • The Star Ledger writes, "Before losing to eventual Ivy League champ and Sweet 16 participant Cornell by three points twice last season, Princeton had been a factor in the conference’s race for its [first] NCAA berth since 2004-05."
  • In NBA D-League action last night, the Austin Toros led the Ft. Wayne Mad Ants, 72-65 with just under 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. It was at that juncture that Ryan Wittman ('10) made his D-League debut when he entered the game with 3:48 left in the period. Just 45 seconds later, Wittman hit his first field goal followed by another Wittman basket, a three-pointer with 1:48 to go in the quarter. The Wittman "Winner" put Ft. Wayne ahead 74-72. Wittman finished the game with 5 points (and 1 steal), all scored in Ft. Wayne's 11-0 run in the 3rd quarter. Ft. Wayne went on to win the game, 103-100. Ft. Wayne's team president, Jeff Potter noted in his personal blog, "Ryan Wittman had a very nice start last night, and I like what he brings to the team." The Ft. Wayne News Sentinel notes, "Ryan Wittman, acquired two days ago, came off the bench in the third quarter and hit two big shots to give a spark to the team and the crowd." • Slope Sports is advertising for new student reporters next year.
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 3 is No. 260 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 222 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 241 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

I think Cornell has five titles?

1954
1987
2008-10 (3)

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

1954 was an EIBL title (as were the 1913, 1914 and 1924 titles).

The Ivy titles were 88, 08, 09, 10.
