News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Big Red's games this weekend in Ithaca vs. Penn (2/11/11) and Princeton (2/12/11) with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and note for Friday.

  • Tonight's pre-game show interview on WVBR with Barry Leonard will be sophomore guard, Jon Gray. Catch the pregame show on WVBR.com at 6:30 pm.

PENN (9-10, 3-2 Ivy) at CORNELL (5-15, 1-5 Ivy)

Penn is rewriting the standard for heartbreaking losses. Take the final 16 seconds of last Tuesday’s game at Princeton. Leading by one with the ball, Eggleston got T’ed up for calling a timeout that Penn didn’t have. Then, with the score tied, Miles Cartwright turned over the inbound pass and fouled Hummer. To cap it off, Fran Dougherty missed a wide-open layup with six seconds left that would have forced double overtime.

The Quakers need a win to erase the sting of their last two games (last Saturday, they blew a three-point lead in double overtime to Harvard), and they should be able to get it over Cornell.

Pick: Penn 68, Cornell 63

PRINCETON at CORNELL

Cornell got off the schneid last weekend with its win over Brown. Maybe it can have a Penn-circa-2010 turnaround and start racking up some league wins now. Unlikely, but this Big Red team has enough talent to challenge Princeton and force the Tigers to play well in order to win. I expect they will.

Pick: Princeton 73, Cornell 67

  • The Crimson previews Harvard's next opponent, Yale and notes the Bulldogs, "swept Columbia and Cornell at home last weekend."
  • The Columbia Spectator's Bart Lopez questions the methodology of selecting All-Stars from good and mediocre teams and notes, "In 2009-10, three Cornell players were selected to the first team, along with current Warrior Jeremy Lin from Harvard, and the top scorer in the conference Zack Rosen from Penn. I don’t think each of the three Cornell players were better individually than every other player in the league, but they won games together and deserved those spots."
  • The Spectator also questions the mixed signals from the Lions and writes, "Maybe the Lions are suffering from a crisis of confidence? Captain Noruwa Agho is supposed to be an All-Ivy performer, a scoring machine with a newfound passing game. Then why has he scored six points in half of the Ivy games? He’s driving into the lane, but then he isn’t shooting. Six assists AND six turnovers in one game? Oy vey. That’s part of it, but they won that game against Cornell when he only scored six points."
  • The Princeton Packet writes, "The Tigers have shown they know how to win the close ones, particularly when they get into overtime. With the win [against Penn], Princeton improved to 10-0 at Jadwin Gym, but now they play their first Ivy road games, at Columbia tonight and at three-time defending champion Cornell on Saturday."
  • Previewing Yale's trip to Hanover, NH on Saturday, the Yale Daily News notes, "Dartmouth’s lone Ivy win came at home against Cornell two weeks ago."
  • Previewing Columbia's weekend, the Spectator writes, "In their first two home games since topping Cornell on Jan. 15, this weekend Columbia plays host to two of the Ivy League’s elite in Princeton and Penn... Columbia will welcome Penn (9-10, 3-2 Ivy) to Levien Gymnasium for its Alumni Night. The greats of years past will be treated to a matchup of two of the Ivy League’s current stars in the Lions’ Noruwa Agho and the Quakers’ Zack Rosen. Rosen, along with Harvard’s Jeremy Lin, was one of only two non-Cornell players to be named first team all-Ivy last season, and Agho was named to the preseason first team all-Ivy before the 2010-2011 campaign."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 11 is No. 250 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 212 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 224. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Is that Columbia writer serious? The three werent better than other players in the league? I challenge you to name better than those three at their positions. Cant do it because there werent. I suppose he thinks that them going as far as they did was luck?
