News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Big Red's games this weekend at Princeton tonight and Penn on Saturday with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Friday...

  • Last night in NBA D-League action, Ryan Wittman ('10) of the Ft. Wayne Mad Ants received 19 minutes of playing time and posted 2/3 FGs for 6 points and grabbed 1 rebound and dished 1 assist for a +11 efficiency rating as Ft. Wayne knocked off the Springfield Armor, 120-94. Wittman and the Ants face the Dakota Wizards in Bismarck on Saturday and Sunday. The games will be steamed live and free on the D-League website. See the game story in the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette.
  • The Clarion Ledger lists incoming Cornell recruit, Devin Cherry (Meridian HS) Meridian, MS, 6-3, G, as one of the players to watch in the state 6A playoffs.
  • A former Cornell J.V. basketball player will see his daughter attend Cornell next year and play for the Big Red women's soccer team. See the story in the Westport News on Neil Katz and his daughter, Jacklyn.
  • Former Cornell head coach and current Boston College head coach, Steve Donahue told WEEI his recruiting philosophy:

“First and foremost I just want high-character kids,” Donahue said. “Basketball at this level can be very stressful in a lot of ways. [We want] kids that can maintain their perseverance on and off the court, just have a great way about them, incredibly coachable, love the game. I think those things are critical. And obviously we want talent. But those things are first and foremost. And I think we did that with all five kids. I think they’re very coachable. I think they really care about the team first. And I think their skills fit what we do on the basketball court as well.”

Added Donahue: “I think at a place like Boston College, I think I have the ability — as opposed to Cornell — to really go after kids who fit what we do. … In terms of basketball things, it’s more of a skill, basketball IQ, you err on the side of that, as opposed to length and athleticism — not that I don’t want length and athleticism — but I think I’ve got to have those first two in a player before I really start moving on.”

  • Former Cornell assistant coach under Steve Donahue, Joe Burke, will lead his Skidmore College team in the Liberty League semifinals tonight against RPI. See the Saratogian for the story.
  • Former Cornell assistant coach under Steve Donahue and former forward and member of a Wisconsin Final Four team, Mark Vershaw has resigned as head coach of Division III Monmouth College (IL). See the story in the Monmouth College Courier. Vershaw was often credited with the development of former All Ivy big man, Andrew Naeve ('07).
  • The Trenton Times writes, "The Princeton men enter the weekend a half-game behind first-place Harvard (20-4, 9-1). The Tigers (20-5, 8-1) face a similar situation. They need to beat the teams they should in order to keep pace with the Crimson. This weekend presents that goal. Princeton hosts Cornell (7-17, 3-7) at 7 tonight. Princeton won the first meeting by a field goal, 57-55."
  • FosterCityPatch.com notes of Princeton's Dan Marvaides: "Entering tonight’s game against Cornell, Mavraides is averaging 12.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and a team-best 2.9 assists, while shooting 39.8 percent from 3-point range."
  • Previewing tonight's game between the Tigers and Big Red, the Princetonian writes:

For the men’s basketball team, Jadwin Gymnasium has served as a welcome abode, where the Tigers are 10-0 thus far. This weekend, the team plays its final regular season games at home, taking on Ivy League foes Cornell and Columbia.

...After its 38.2 percent field-goal percentage in last weekend’s loss, the [Princeton] team seeks greater success shooting the ball this weekend. In its two-point victory against Cornell (7-17, 3-7) the team shot 47.6 percent from the field, a more accurate reflection of its strong shooting, as the Tigers rank 66th in Division I in the statistic at 46.1 percent. Cornell ranks near the bottom of the Ivy League, though a resounding 20-point victory over Dartmouth should provide the Big Red with some momentum...

Despite the Tigers’ opportunity to look ahead to their path to the Ivy League championship — which they could guarantee by winning the remaining five games — the seniors have grounded their teammates, saying that the team does not lose sight of any given game, even a matchup against a team they previously beat by 30 points.

“Winning these last five games is not going to be an easy feat,” said Mavradies. “I am not focused on any game outside Friday’s against Cornell. That being said, we are 1-0 against each of the remaining five teams, so we do hold confidence in that.”

A refocused defensive effort, along with a return to excellence in the area of the field-goal shooting, will be key in achieving wins over Cornell and Columbia this weekend.

CORNELL (7-17, 3-7 Ivy) at PRINCETON (20-5, 8-1 Ivy)

Every week, it seemed the Tigers were able to eke out a one-possession win, so I was pretty confident the other shoe would drop and some team would eventually beat them. I just didn’t think that team would be Princeton, itself.

Against the Bears last Saturday, the Tigers shot four-of-21 from three and 21-of-55 from the field. They were also one-for-one at shooting themselves in the foot. I’m going to chalk up Princeton’s loss to having an off night as much as a solid Brown effort, and I predict that they right the ship tonight.

CORNELL at PENN

In Ithaca late last Friday night, I went to the Hot Truck, and thoroughly enjoyed my “Double Sui.” It doesn’t make a ton of sense to me that at Cornell—the coldest campus in the Ivies—students need to wait outside for their late night munchies, but at least the food was good. The Big Red might not have the worst cuisine in the league after all. Outside of Dartmouth, though, it might have the worst team. Penn should get a measure of revenge for its loss at Cornell earlier this year.

Pick: Penn 72, Cornell 67

  • The New Haven Register notes, "After beating Cornell, the [Dartmouth] Big Green has lost seven straight league games and falling into last place."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 25 is No. 241 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 202 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 225. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Cornell has won five of its past six games in Jadwin Gymnasium.

Let's make it six of seven. Let's Go, Red!
