News and Notes: Sunday Edition

Below, some news and note for Sunday.

  • Ryan Wittman ('10) and his Ft. Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League played their second consecutive night in Reno against the Big Horns on Saturday. Wittman was making his fourth appearance with the franchise since leaving Italy's LegaDue and earned his second consecutive start. He played 24 minutes finishing with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 turnover on 4/10 FGs and 3/6 from beyond the arc. The Ants fell 109-106. See a full update on Cornell alums playing professionally further down below.
  • Heritage.com notes that incoming Cornell recruit, Dave LaMore (Dexter HS) Dexter, MI, 6-10, C, who scored 18 points on Friday in a loss to Lincoln HS, recorded "several thunderous dunks" during the game. As with Bill Courtney's other incoming recruits, LaMore is known as a defensive stalwart, and in particular, likes to throw his body around and attack the basket on offense. LaMore is a already a solidly built 240 lbs. and will be joined in the class by a very long and bouncy Deion Giddens (Willow Canyon HS) Surprise, AZ, 6-9, who is still a very slim 210 pounds. Giddens is still very much developing as an offensive player. But he reminds us of, at least on the defensive end, Princeton's Kareem Maddox. Also in the Cornell class is the solidly built, Ned Tomic (North Royalton HS) North Royalton, OH, 6-7, F, who comes in with Alex Tyler-like size at 230 pounds. Tomic is only recently, however, expanding his game to become a traditional post player. As a younger high school player, he was more known for floating on the perimeter as a Princeton-styled forward.
  • WHRB of Harvard recaps the Crimson's late 22 point comeback over Brown on Saturday evening and writes, "On an ordinary evening, many Crimson faithful might have shaken their head on hearing of the [Princeton] Tigers' narrow win over Cornell. But they had just witnessed their own team avoiding disaster at home. And for tonight, that was enough."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 13 is No. 238 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 200 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 220. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

i had a wonderful morning and afternoon savoring the win over penn. too bad about the outcome against princeton, but i hope this team can get to a respectable finish by the end of the year. 4 home games should help.

btw, i was somewhat surprised that vegas "knew" that penn would be swept this weekend, having the quakers as underdogs in both of their games.
