News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Thursday...

  • Previewing Friday's Dexter HS vs. Chelsea HS basketball game, Ann Arbor.com writes, "More important than what floor the game is being played on will be the health of Cornell-bound Dexter center Dave LaMore, who has shown the ability to dominate stretches, but who has also not been at 100 percent of late because of an ailing ankle. With a healthy LaMore in the lineup, I like Dexter in this one. But it’s really hard for me to pick a talented Chelsea team to lose its third consecutive game. No one said picking games was easy. Dexter, 51-49."
  • Previewing tonight's Austin at Ft. Wayne game in the NBA D-League, the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette writes, "The Mad Ants return with a fresh face in Ryan Wittman, a 6-foot-7 swingman from Cornell who led the Big Red to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 last March. Wittman, who played this season in Italy, replaces guard Oliver Lafayette, the team’s second-leading scorer with a 16.4 average, who signed a contract to play in Turkey. 'I saw Ryan a little bit in college,' [Ft. Wayne Ants coach, Jerry] Meyer said. 'I know he can shoot the ball and has pretty good size. I think we’ve been hurt a little bit by (the opposition) posting up our wings and our bigs. I think that’s been our biggest weakness defensively. They’ve really gone inside on us.'" Cornell fans can watch every NBA D-League game free online at the D-League website. Tonight's game be viewed here. And special thanks to Jeff Foote ('10) tweeting a great website to purchase your Mad Ants gear.
  • The Daily Princetonian writes, "It lacks the enclosed, arena-like feel of Penn’s Palestra or Yale’s Amphitheater. Its large size precludes the kind of intimacy found at Dartmouth and Cornell. Even on the day of a big game, a packed row of side bleachers cannot conceal the indoor track in the background, a subtle reminder that basketball is only a small part of its function. But it is home, and the members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams would not prefer to play anywhere but Jadwin Gymnasium...Besides the inherent advantage the players and coaches believe comes with mastering the ins and outs of such an unusual gym, many simply cited the strong support of an enthusiastic crowd as a reason for their success. 'Some of our bigger games — the Cornell game from last year comes to mind ... all our games against Pennsylvania, our true regional rival — those games take on an electric feel,' said men’s head coach Sydney Johnson ’97, Princeton guard from 1993 to 1997. 'As a player and as a coach, it’s fun to see that many people in a gym. You get pretty fired up.'”
  • The Harvard Crimson writes, "Harvard men’s basketball is still riding high after beating Columbia and Cornell this past weekend, in the process extending its winning streak to eight games. But Friday and Saturday nights could change that, as the Crimson face off against the only two undefeated teams left in the Ancient Eight: Penn and Princeton. And unfortunately, Harvard will have to face both of these teams on the road."
  • Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated writes, "Finally, I'd like to issue everyone a warning: I am getting dangerously close to ranking Harvard. The Crimson are 15-3 and 4-0 in the Ivy League. Their three losses have been at George Mason in the season opener; at Michigan by a three points; and at UConn. Harvard beat Colorado at home and Boston College on the road. The Crimson plays the Ivy League's second- and third-place teams, Princeton and Penn, on the road this weekend. If they win those two, I expect (though I can't promise) they'll be on my ballot next week. Get used to these three words, Hoopheads: This year's Cornell."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 3 is No. 257 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 219 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 241 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

"This Years Cornell"?

Two takeaways.
1. Honored that we are being used to very favorably compare to another team.
2. Why does it have to be Harvard and their super egotistical Keith Wright?

And one last thing, Harvard - if people actually do start comparing you to us, you better make us proud and the Ivy league proud.

Listen, I want to see us go 10-4 and finish top half of league, but I think I'm also going to root that we get a strong rep in the tourney who can make some noise. If that has to be Harvard, then that has to be Harvard. I wouldn't mind them going 13-1 (they'll get that loss to us btw) and having a solid first round tourney upset (no second round though please).
