News and Notes: Saturday Thank You SENIORS Edition

Get all the information you need about Cornell's Senior Night game this evening vs. Yale on with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Saturday...and some multimedia links for tonight's game.

  • Above, the current Ivy League standings. The Big Red are within striking distance of a 4th place upper division finish with a win this evening on Senior Night vs. Yale.
  • On Cornell's incoming recruits: The Meridian Star writes on the Mississippi State 6A championship game tonight at 8:30 in Jackson involving Devin Cherry (Meridian HS) Meridian, MS, 6-3, G. On ESPN Radio 104.5, Dave Doemel, head coach of Galal Cancer (Christian Brothers Academy) Albany, NY, 6-2., G, discusses his senior star. Listen to the interview. Similar to Louis Dale ('10), Cancer is known as a slashing point guard with an ability to change up and shift his speed on the dribble. He is also a stellar rebounder and defender.
  • After falling to Reno in NBA D-League action on Friday, Ft. Wayne Ants coach, Joey Meyer said, “That was the best all year that we’ve had open looks at the three-point line... We had (Ryan) Wittman, (Corey) Allmond and Rod (Wilmont), our best three-point shooters, with open looks, and we didn’t hit them.” Wittman finished 0/2 from the floor.

In Friday’s Times, Peter May wrote about the expectation surrounding the Harvard men’s basketball team as it headed into Friday night’s game with Penn and Saturday’s against Princeton:

If Harvard can wrap up the season with home victories over the traditional Ivy League powers Penn and Princeton — and the Crimson have not lost at cozy Lavietes Pavilion this season — it will clinch no worse than a tie for the conference title. That would represent a first for the program, now in its 100th season.

While an Ivy League title has certainly been the program’s white whale, the team has been in this position before. In 1984, Harvard entered the final Ivy League weekend needing a sweep of Columbia and Cornell to finish tied for first with Princeton, which it had beaten twice that season.

“I think Harvard’s going to do it,” Dolores Plutnicki told Andy Doctoroff, a columnist for The Harvard Crimson in 1984. “The whole season has been pretty good since Duke. And they’ve been coming back if they’re down by a few points. That’s the mark of a championship team.”

Wow, of all times for a mother to be wrong.

Harvard didn’t do it that season, that much we know. But as a co-captain of that team, I had never felt so sure that we would win as I did upon entering that Friday night game with Cornell.

O.K., so the team is remembered for its free-throw shooting. But we had terrific players, including Joe Carrabino, who became the program’s career leading scorer; Bob Ferry, Danny Ferry’s older brother; Arne Duncan, now the United States secretary of education; point guard Pat Smith; and a terrific shooter in Keith Webster.

I don’t remember coming out flat or playing poorly; I don’t think we did. We just never could control the tempo, we never got in a rhythm; it was a helpless feeling, really.

As the Cornell coach, Tom Miller, told Jeff Zucker, a sportswriter for The Crimson who later had a meteoric rise as a TV executive at NBC, “That’s about as well as we’ve played all year.

Nice timing, that.

They had five guys score in double digits, and beat us, 76-67. I remember one time coming out to guard Ken Bantum on the wing in that game, knowing he would shoot as soon as he got it. I did not hesitate. I was heading out to block his shot before he even caught the ball, and I guessed right, too. He didn’t even fake me. At any other time that season that shot is blocked, or tipped, but Bantum made it as if he were left wide open. And that’s the way the whole game went. I can still see his wristbands.

A victory the next night against Columbia was bittersweet.

I was at Yale last weekend to watch Harvard try to maintain its half-game lead on Princeton. Yale played great. Harvard missed its last shot, lost, 70-69, and some Yale fans stormed the court, spilling into the halfcourt circle. I immediately thought back to the Cornell game. How could Harvard lose with everything to play for?

Sometimes it’s the other team.

I WAS happy to read in May’s article that Harvard Coach Tommy Amaker planned to talk to the team before Friday’s game against Penn about the players and coaches who have come before them and who, he said, “are just as much a part of this journey as we are.”

It was interesting to read a quotation by Keith Wright recently in The Boston Herald: “I think putting my first banner up is definitely why I came here.”

It was interesting because this is what my teammate Joe Carrabino once listed among his reasons for choosing Harvard after being recruited by colleges like Stanford and Georgetown: “the chance … to lead the school to its first-ever Ivy League title.”

And this is what Jeremy Lin, a 2010 graduate who plays for the Golden State Warriors, once said: winning “has been our goal for a while, to be the first team to win the Ivy League title.”

And so it goes. Players from other eras can give the same reasons, tell the same stories. As Amaker said in The Times: “I’m not sure you can walk anywhere on this campus and find something that hasn’t been done before. But we are on the verge of doing it.”

Amaker is right. The former players are a part of this journey, and in more ways than one.

I mean, if we had won, would there be so much interest in Harvard’s second Ivy League title?

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 5 is No. 218 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 199 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 215. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
