News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Thursday...
  • We expect to post some details of Cornell's 2011-2012 schedule in early to mid April as the coaching staff finalizes some of the contracts with the opposing schools. Fans should expect to see between 3-4 "guarantee" games against teams from the Big East and Big Ten with teams from the A-10 and CAA also as possibilities for guarantees (meaning no return games and instead the receipt of cash for making the trip). Cornell is also expected to play 28 games and will not participate in any exempt tournament per NCAA rules since the Big Red appeared in the Preseason NIT in 2008 and the Legends Classic in 2009. Meanwhile, a Division III game early in the season remains a possibility. From an overall perspective, the 2011-2012 schedule appears to be of a similar level of strength as the 2010-2011 slate. Return games are expected for the following:
Albany (home)
at Delaware
at St. Bonaventure
Lehigh (home)
Binghamton (home)
at Bucknell
at Buffalo
at Stony Brook
  • Summer Plans: Cornell could see a large number of players staying in Ithaca together for all or part of the summer as the team finalizes its individual and collective training plans, including but not limited to participation as counselors in the Cornell Elite Prospect Camp in June.
  • Cornell's staff has been very busy with recruiting efforts as well as scouting the Big Red's incoming recruits for next season. In recent days, Cornell coaches have been making trips, when travel is feasible, to see Cornell's recruits appear in their respective high school playoff and tournament games.
  • Speaking of incoming recruits, some updates: Dave LaMore (Dexter HS) Dexter, MI, 6-10, C, had his high school career come to and last night as Dexter fell to Skyline HS of Ann Arbor, 46-35 in the Class A district semifinal. LaMore finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds. See MLive.com for the recap. Ned Tomic (North Royalton HS) North Royalton, OH, 6-7, F, had his career come to an end as well as NRHS lost to Revere 54-43 in the district semifinal. Division I recruit, 6'7" Larry Nance, Jr. finished with 15 points for Revere (which also boasts another forward standing 6'8") while Tomic finished with 14 points. See the recaps in the Fairlawn-Bath Patch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Both Tomic and Shonn Miller (St. Ignatius HS) Cleveland, OH, 6-6, F, were named 2nd Team All District Division I for the Northeast Lakes. The teams are as follows:

FIRST TEAM: Ronnie Willoughby, Avon Lake, 6-5, sr., 19.2; Terry Rozier, Shaker Hts., 6-2, jr., 20.2; Trey Lewis, Garfield Hts., 6-0, sr., 23.0; Cole Krizancic, Mentor, 6-1, sr., 21.5; Justin Fritts, Mentor, 6-3, jr., 22.5; Aaron White, Strongsville, 6-8, sr., 23.1; Delbert Love, Lakewood St. Edward, 6-1, sr., 18.8; Tony Farmer, Garfield Hts., 6-5, soph., 18.1.

Player of the year: Trey Lewis, Garfield Hts. Coaches of the year: Eric Smith, Avon Lake; Sonny Johnson, Garfield Hts.

SECOND TEAM: Ned Tomic, North Royalton, 6-7, sr., 22.3; Collin Barth, Mentor, 6-1, sr., 16.4; Myles Hamilton, Lakewood St. Edward, 6-1, jr., 12.6; Cody Martin, Cleve. Hts., 6-6, sr., 14.0; Shonn Miller, Cleve. St. Ignatius, 6-7, sr., 14.0; Pharaoh Brown, Lyndhurst Brush, 6-7, jr., 16.0; Gurjeet Gil, Strongsville, 6-1, sr., 18.6.

  • The New York Times' William Rhoden writes that the Ivy League is in the shadow of the Big East Conference and notes, "There is always a buzz when an Ivy League basketball team does well. Take Cornell last season, reaching the Round of 16...Until Harvard crashed the party this season, Penn, Princeton and recently Cornell have dominated the conference."
  • Lost Lettermen published a piece on Harvard's basketball history, including the recent recruiting violations and mass player cuts committed by the program and notes with respect Harvard basketball in the 1980s, "Heartbreak came in 1984 when the Harvard program was led by conference player of the year Joe Carrabino. The Crimson actually won both games over eventual league champion Princeton. But sitting in the driver’s seat for the NCAA bid, Harvard lost a game to Cornell in its second-to-last game, choking the bid away."
  • “I’m very proud of producing successful teams, and ... Cornell is so successful [at] producing successful alumni ... I was kind of disappointed when you have successful teams [and] cannot keep your coaches,” former New York Giant and Cornell alum, Pete Gogolak told the Cornell Daily Sun. “You reward success, and these great coaches like [Jeff] Tambroni and [Steve] Donahue — these guys come around maybe once in a generation, and so I was very disappointed that Cornell couldn’t keep them.”
  • The Daily Pennsylvanian's Brian Kotloff argues that Chris Wroblewski did not belong on the All Ivy League team. He writes, "Wroblewski seems random among this group, almost like a reward to Cornell for the past three seasons. His team was 6-8 and he shot 39 percent from the floor. Much like [Sean] McGonagill, his nice numbers come from the fact that he needed to take shots to keep his young team afloat...You could say it's easier to get open looks on a great team like Harvard, but from what we saw out of the Big Red this year, they really space the floor and try to spread the ball around, so an efficient scorer could wait for good opportunities."
  • As Boston College prepares for the ACC Tournament, the Boston Herald writes, "After 10 years in the Ivy League, this is [Steve] Donahue’s first experience on the tournament bubble. He isn’t allowing it to change his approach. “'I try to do it like I did it at Cornell,” Donahue said. “You just can’t get caught up in those things. The things that matter most are the things that you do in the practice facility. We had to basically win every game in the Ivy League to get to the NCAA tournament, which I feel the same way here. We have to play really well. We’re excited to play in the ACC tournament. I think you focus in on that and try to advance rather than all the other things that can cloud your mind.'"
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 10 is No. 206 out of 347 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 189 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 208. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

I smiled when I read in the NYT article that Robin Harris "squeezed both hands tightly on her mobile phone -- so she wouldn't be tempted to clap for either [Penn or Princeton last Tuesday night]."

I assume that everybody at The Palestra knew she was rooting for Princeton. Any commissioner in any conference in America should be rooting for a one-game playoff. What would be the alternative? Penn wins last Tuesday night and the Harvard basketball team storms the court by themselves at Levietes, where they've gathered to watch the game?

Yeah, like Robin Harris would be rooting for that. Throw in the Harvard David against the Princeton Goliath angle and this is her dream come true.

Is it just me, or is the Palestra conducive to some awesome photos? That, and maybe the photographer at the Cornell/Penn game was using a special lens or something.
