- A year ago Jamal Cherry walked onto the 2010-2011 Cornell roster following an MCL injury which sidelined Dominick Scelfo. The Florida Courier provides an update on Cherry:
TAMPA PREP DUO TOGETHER AGAIN
Tampa college basketball players heating things up in the City of Orlando/Midnight Basketball Pro-Am Summer League at Dr. J.R. Smith Neighborhood Center where NBA players, College Players and Neighborhood Streetball Legends compete.
Jay Bowie (Marist) and Jamal Cherry (Cornell) both 2010 graduates of Tampa Prep and top scorers who led their high school team to the 2010 State Championship Game are back together again with the Brandon Bolts ProAm Team. Jay is averaging 12.3 points per game and Jamal 12.6 points per game. I had the chance to watch the duo play against the "A Team” which just happens to be the team of NBA twin players Joey and Stephen Graham. While the Brandon Bolts lost the game (not by much), it was clear that both Jay and Jamal have developed this past year into true collegiate players not intimidated by the speed and size of the Pro-Am level of play. Jay Bowie had a great season with Marist seeing lots of playing time and is expected to have a major role next year. In speaking with Jamal Cherry, he indicated that he walked on to the Cornell team and did not see much playing time this past year, but has been putting in "work” this summer and is determined to compete hard this upcoming year and help the team in anyway he can. He shared, "I am going back much more stronger and confident than last year”. From what I saw in this game, Jamal had 16 points and played lock down defense, he is definitely ready for the challenge back at Cornell. Both young men are looking forward to returning to their respective teams.
