News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

  • NBA.com writes. "Bryan Colangelo has lived in Toronto six years as Raptors president and general manager. Raised in Phoenix, schooled at Cornell, he has started the application process to become a Canadian citizen. He gets national pride and how it connects to the only NBA team in a country with six time zones and a reach from the Pacific to the Atlantic to the Arctic."

Jeff Foote, Springfield Armor -- Said a longtime NBA scout about Foote prior to the 2010 NBA Draft: "I feel Foote might fit in on an NBA team that needs a backup center who can think the game, be a willing and adept passer and be a factor around the rim on both ends of the court. Foote has a little nastiness to him, but not a lot. Except for having a little less nastiness, he reminds me a lot of Jeff Foster, who is still around and helpful to the Indiana Pacers. Foote is taller than Foster and offers more shot-blocking, but Foster possesses a little more mobility to compete for rebounds away from his body. Both guys have a nice shooting touch from 15 feet and in. I believe Foote will get a serious look from NBA team and eventually land a spot as a situational center who can play against other seven-footers." Foote, who wasn't drafted in 2010 and spent his rookie season overseas, was in training camp with the Portland Trail Blazers, then returned to Springfield, where he's averaged 14.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in 21 games.

  • In analyzing the creation of a non-conference schedule, the Yale Daily News writes, "Cornell head coach William Courtney said that he schedules Division III schools because it adds a home game to the nonconference schedule. Nonconference schedules are not only filled with extremes. Courtney and [Yale coach James] Jones said they also play against opposition closer to their level. 'We try to schedule comparable teams, teams we think will be successful in their conferences,' Courtney said. 'We try not to schedule teams that are not so good so that we don’t get a false sense of ourselves.' Nonconference games also serve as a recruiting tool. Cornell basketball head coach William Courtney said that since he and other Ivies recruit nationally, the opportunity for a recruit to play close to home at least once is an incentive. Jones agreed with his Cornell counterpart, adding that it is part of his 'recruiting spiel.' He said he tells every recruit that Yale will play in his hometown at least once over his four-year career. 'Next year we’re going to Nevada for [Austin] Morgan ’13, St. Mary’s for Jeremiah [Kreisberg] ’14, and this year we went down to Wake Forest for Mike Grace ’13,' Jones said. [Yale SID Tim] Bennett added that a game is also being scheduled against Iowa State in the future for guard Jesse Pritchard ’14, a native of Ames, Iowa. Next year, Courtney said, Cornell will play Vanderbilt for guard Miles Asafo-Adjei of Antioch, Tenn. Scheduling games against mammoth college basketball teams itself serves a recruiting purpose, Courtney said. Playing every year on a big court in front of tens of thousands of fans is alluring to an Ivy League basketball recruit. 'Absolutely all of the [Ivy League] schools will use those attractive games against big-name opponents to show recruits,' Courtney explained."
  • Committed Cornell recruit, Nolan Cressler (Plum HS) Plum, PA, 6-4, G (class of 2012), scored 28 points last night in his final high school home game, a win over rival Gateway and its future Division I forward, 6'10" Barnett Harris. See recaps in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Pittsburgh Post Tribune, and the Advance Leader. "Nolan made some big shots, and that's what we expect from him," Plum coach Ron Richards said. "He's the best player around here for a reason. When we needed the hoops, he knocked down some deep threes for us."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 8 is No. 186 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 181 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 194. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
