News and Notes: Saturday Edition

It is Senior Weekend. Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's game vs. Harvard tonight (February 3, 7 pm, ESPN3.com) with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Saturday...

  • Check out StatSheet.com's player evaluation grades for Cornell's players last night in action against Dartmouth. Galal Cancer, Jon Gray and Drew Ferry each received an "A" from StatSheet.
  • Cornell's game on Saturday evening in Ithaca against Harvard will be broadcast on ESPN3. Prior to the game Cornell will honor Chris Wroblewski, Max Groebe, Anthony Gatlin and Andrew Ferry, Cornell's graduating seniors. The pregame ceremonies may only be viewed through Cornell's Redcast service. The pre-game show starts at 6:30. Also tune in to hear a potential exclusive interview by Barry Leonard with Ryan Wittman ('10).
  • Following Princeton's Friday night game, Princeton head coach Mitch Henderson said, "We dropped really tough games at Cornell and at Yale, and Penn drilled us. Other than those games, I think we feel really good about the way were playing."

  • Not a member of Twitter? See what The Cornell Basketball Blog is tweeting and retweeting each day by visiting our Twitter Timeline.

  • Per the Pittsburgh Tribune, committed Cornell recruit Nolan Cressler will play on March 24 in the 16th Annual Cager Classic, an all star game for players in the Pittsburgh area.
  • Per the South Bend Tribune, Robert Mischler, a committed Cornell recruit, hit a pair of game changing three-pointers and finished with 12 points in a sectional playoff win.
  • The Plano Star recaps the season of Plano West High School and committed Cornell recruit, Holt Harmon. In addition to 6'9" Harmon, West graduates 6'8" forward, T.J. Cline, son of women's basketball legend, Nancy Lieberman. The Star notes, "Harmon isn't done with basketball though as he has already signed with Cornell. And Harmon might not be the only West player taking the collegiate court next season as [Cline] has drawn interest from UC-Riverside and San Jose State." West coach Anthony Morgan said, "I think Holt really helped TJ. Holt was doing work down on the block, which allowed TJ to step out and open up some other things."
  • Prized Cornell recruit, Braxston Bunce may be out the rest of his high school season. The Daily Courier writes:

If the Kelowna Owls are to accomplish what is expected of them this weekend, they'll have do it without junior national basketball team member Braxston Bunce.
The tall, 6-foot-11 post hobbled off the court on Sunday with a knee injury during the team's practice and has had daily visits to his physiotherapist ever since. As of Thursday, he had not been cleared to compete in the Okanagan Valley senior 3A boys championship tournament in Kamloops.
Although ranked No. 1 in the province, the Owls still need to win the Valley title to earn the right to play at the B.C. School Sports provincial championship tournament, March 13-17 at the Langley Events Centre.
"We'll just have to get this thing done without (Braxston)," head coach Harry Parmar said on Thursday as his team prepared for a Valley semifinal encounter this evening. "Braxston and the doctors were thinking he would be ready for Saturday, but we're not going to take any chances. We need him to be completely healed for the provincials - should we get there."
The injury - termed 'a tweak' by Parmar - is to Bunce's right knee, the same one that required surgery and forced him to miss the entire season of his Grade 10 year.

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 3 is No. 174 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 204 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 204 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

CBB, I see that you are engaged in a furious Twitter debate with Chip Bayers and others, shouting from your usual soapbox that nothing the Ivy League has ever done (or will likely ever do in the future) compares with our peak orgasmic achievement season of 2010.

Out of respect for the Cornell team of 2012, would you please focus less on trying to minimize this year until it's actually over? We still have one very, very important game to play. A win would be huge for all sorts of reasons.

At 9:30 tonight, you are welcome to go back to your ongoing campaign to trivialize all Ivy seasons except 2010.

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

And others? Who are the others? And nothing was trivialized. 2010 is better, although 2012 was strong by Ivy standards.

Your choice of verb tenses is curious: "2010 *is* better, although 2012 *was* strong by Ivy standards."

2010 is over. You have to accept that, and move on.

2012 will soon be over, but there is important work still left to be done. One win tonight and this season will go from disappointing to promising.

The conversation is about present vs. past. If you are not interested in it, feel free not to read it.

Ok, now our season is over. A fond farewell to Wrobo, and best wishes to Harvard in the NCAA so that they represent the Ivies well (although based on what I've seen they may be a one and done).

Present vs. Past:

Below in parenthesis is the change in a composite of the ~Mar-1 Sagarin, Pomeroy, and Rivals RPI's, for the eight Ivy teams, between 2009-10 and 2011-12:

Brown (-44)
Columbia (+112)
Cornell (-140)
Dartmouth (+30)
Harvard (+64)
Pennsylvania (+176)
Princeton (+30)
Yale (+125)

The average RPI change for the eight teams is +44. That's alot.

Brown and Cornell were measurably worse. The other six were noticeably better.

By a broad-based objective measure of relative performance, the Ivy League, as a whole, performed much better this year compared to the other conferences, than two years ago.

At this moment, based on RPI's from the popular services, one can conclude that 2009-10 was a great year for Cornell basketball, but 2011-12 was much better than 2009-10 for the league as a group.

The 2011-12 post-season is yet to come.
