News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, news and notes for Wednesday...

  • The Ivy League midseason media conference is today. Bill Courtney is scheduled to speak to the media at precisely 11:39 a.m. A podcast of the conference will be posted on IvyLeagueSports.com this evening
  • From the Dartmouth-Army game last night, the Valley News writes, "The angry yelling of coach Zach Spiker, a former Cornell assistant, could be heard throughout the stands after the visitors took a time out with eight minutes remaining and Dartmouth up by 20 points. It’s no fun being blown out by a foe that entered the night at 2-10."
  • FoxSports.com warns Duke about its slow starts and writes, "Duke's next game is at N.C. State on Saturday. A similarly slow start as Duke (15-0, 2-0) has experienced against Clemson (29 percent shooting in first half), Davidson (tied at the half), Elon (tied at 25-25), Cornell (led 28-26) and Santa Clara over the last month could spell disaster against the Wolfpack."
  • The EuroLeague website previews Jeff Foote's (Cornell '10) and Zalgiris' game against Real Madrid on Friday.
  • Below, links to our recap sections from each of Cornell's games during the 2012-2013 season.

  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or        not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team                         winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents'                opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 9 is No. 210 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 251 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 240 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

I, for one, am optimistic.

Barring catastrophe, Cornell will crush Old Westbury on Saturday and enter its game with Columbia at 8 - 9. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the closest the team's come to .500 entering league play in Courtney's three seasons.

Gray appears to be hitting his stride, averaging 8.8 ppg for the season and scoring in double figures in three of the team's last four contests.

Miller has continued to dominate, averaging 10.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest.

Peck, if healthy, is good for eight points and five rebounds a game.

Eitan's shooting 66% from the floor, good for 7.4 ppg.

If the team can make free throws, protect the ball, and keep the rebounding margin respectable, they might surprise some people.

I agree with everything you just stated and would like to add that if Courtney would use Cherry more he could increase productivity on offense without losing anything on Defense.

Look at the stats, and who Cherry plays the most minutes agaisnt, it isn't the cupcakes. He has been producing in limited minutes agaisnt the better competition. Does Courtney really believe Cherry is the worse guard in the rotation, looking at his mins the last for games what else can u conclude!!!! Believe Cherry has to do an evaluation of his evaluator.

I don't know what's going to happen, but I'm not that crazy about the potential 8-9 record because most of it has almost entirely come against cupcakes (except WMU). Statistically, we're worse than we've been in the last two years.

Even Brown's best two wins are better than any one of our's. Columbia is beating teams in the 225+ range comfortably (except Marist), though they are struggling against top 200 (except Nova).

I'm glad Johnny and Scelfo are emerging and hope Peck comes back. But almost every Ivy game will require doing better than we've done in a long while.

Agree with 5:01 - Particularly the bit about FT's - should be easy to focus, relax, follow-through, and remember practice, (not the playground) and if we can hit that 80% someone said, we should win our share. Go Big Red.

Anon 5:01 here again...

One thing I neglected to mention in my earlier post is the sudden emergence of Dom Scelfo as a legitimate three-point threat. As one of Donahue's recruits, he was no doubt courted to East Hill to fill the void left by Wittman's departure.

He has quietly scored in double figures the last three games (14, 10, and 13 points) and is 6 for 13 from the arc during that stretch. A perimeter assassin could be just what Cornell needs to get over the bubble - especially if the team limits its attempts to no more than fifteen per game, which they did at American to great success.

I'll be there tomorrow (near the bounce house with my five-year-old) cheering them on...

From Anon 5:33 again

Regarding Anon 5:01

Would agree that Scelfo appears to B the most accurate three point artist. Courtney needs to figure out which three point shooter needs to play the most and not play all at same time. Scelfo probably needs to head that class of that trio of Scelfo, Gray and Cressler in that order.

Also Cherry has had nice season so far leading the team in scoring in three separate occasions second in scoring in one or two others. His emergence was not rewarded with any starts only with reduced playing time. Courtney fails to realize the versatility Cherry possesses in scoring, rebounding and assist. But playing other guards who do not produce as much in the same amount of floor time. Team leading scorer in Points Per Minute not for one game but for the season and half the season is over.
