News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's games at Yale, Friday, February 15, 2013, 7 pm and Brown, Saturday, February 16, 2013, 6 pm, with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, news and notes for Friday...

The foursome of games involving Columbia and Cornell against Brown and Yale also provide critical contests in the title conversation as the Ivy slate reaches the midway point.

Friday's game with Cornell (11-12, 3-3 Ivy) and Yale (9-14, 3-3 Ivy) pits two evenly matched teams looking to break their tie in the standings. Both teams are averaging an identical 66.3 ppg with the Bulldogs allowing 66.7 ppg and Big Red allowing 69.0 ppg. Each team will need big performances on both end of the floor to create some separation in the middle of the pack.

Senior forward Errick Peck has been a presence down low for the Big Red as of late, after averaging 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals in his last two games. Yale has seen contributions from numerous player as six players have averaged at least 9.0 ppg in the Bulldogs' last two games. One of the key contributors has been freshman forward Justin Sears, who returned to the lineup from injury and averaged 10.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the team's road sweep over Penn and Princeton.

CORNELL at YALE
Following the Bulldogs’ stunning road upset of Princeton on Saturday, one might have expected bold fonts and exclamation points from a lesser student newspaper covering the event. But, when greeted by success, every veteran knows the necessity of acting like you’ve been there before. That’s why the Yale Daily News didn’t give the upset its own article, and @YDNsports waited a day before composing an original tweet to acknowledge the victory. No need to spike the football.
Pick: Cornell

CORNELL at BROWN
This yawn-inducing Ivy League matchup will be played at Brown’s own Pizzitola Sports Center, or “the Pizza,” as I will disrespectfully refer to it. Did you know John Heisman went to Brown? Yeah, the guy with the trophy. It so happens that one of the lobbies inside the Pizza is named after him. One of the most distinguished athletic alumni in the university’s history gets a lobby inside a building called…the Pizza. Get the man a weight room, at least.
Pick: Cornell
  • The Columbia Spectator quotes Kyle Smith after his team's win over Harvard.  "I think it will be proved that that was a turning point.  But I thought maybe Villanova was, and you know Cornell, maybe that was, and it hasn’t been, thus far. So, you know, we’ll see.”

  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 15 is No. 220 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 233 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 219.  Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Re: comments on an earlier post about how your ranting against statistics makes you seem like a creationist.

A quick perusal of twitter shows you're still arguing with Mr. James. I don't know how Mr. James has been lately, but I do know I stopped reading his BS in 2010 because he was a complete and unbearable clown who thought his statistics were gospel.

Among his straight-faced 2010 predictions: Cornell had a 90-something percent chance to lose to Kansas by 20+ points. He felt really, really sorry about how this was going to happen, but it was inevitable. Oh, and Harvard was going to beat Cornell, and we were refusing to admit it because we were scared to face them. And let's not forget that Cornell had no chance of beating Temple; that was the most unfortunate matching we could possibly have, and you were treated like a lunatic if you believed Cornell had any chance, and he was so so sorry for us. He was straight-faced and serious about these predictions. He was very, very serious and very, very concerned about how we ignored his statistics and he didn't understand why were were so irrational when his statistics clearly showed what was going to happen.

He is a clown.

WE NEED MORE LAMORE.

Bill, wtf are you doing?! Our interior D has sucked all season and you are leaving a very good big on the bench.

Hahahaha. So glad someone called out mrjames. His statistics stuff has been bothering me since it began. At some point your ability to derive knowledge from what you see on the court needs to override what you see in stats. Not to mention that stats are not perfect and in fact derived from his opinion of how they should be calculated to achieve the "best" or "accurate" results.

So, commenter at 11:12am I commend you for pointing this out!

In a new statistic I just found, there is an 87% that mrjames doesn't know how to evaluate basketball with his eyes and thus MUST resort to a stats-only approach. Moneyball it up, sir.

The Ivy League needs more fans.

And MrJames/IvyBball (the same person)--- is extremely important to our league.

Behind the scenes, he and I communicate privately, cooperate and have worked together on piecing together stories.

He has his Ivy views, I have mine. He has an agenda, I have mine. He is a fanatical Harvard fan. I am a huge Cornell fan.

We don't often agree (but sometimes we do).

All of the above said, he believes stats and the use of predictive models are the best way to evaluate the game, the teams, the players.

I disagree.

I happen to think the model is just a part, a fraction of the analysis.
