News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's games vs. Penn, Friday, February 22, 2013, 7 pm and Princeton, Saturday, February 23, 2013, 7 pm, with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, news and notes for Friday...

  • Playing for Zalgiris (Lithuania) last night, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) had a monster impact on a game in a limited 7 minutes of action against Panathinaikos Athens (Greece) in the EuroLeague.  In the brief playing time, Foote finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks but it was not enough as Zalgiris dropped the game, 78-73, a crushing blow to the "Green Death's" chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.
Princeton (12-9, 5-2 Ivy) remains squarely in position to secure a chance to dance in March and has its focus on its back-to-back matchups of Columbia (10-12, 2-6 Ivy) on Friday night and Cornell (13-12, 5-3 Ivy) on Saturday night. The Tigers enter the weekend as the conference leader in scoring defense (58.0 points per game), three-point field goal percentage defense (.331) and assists (14.6 apg).
Sophomore guard Denton Koon (10.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg) has had the hot hand for Princeton lately, leading the team in scoring in each of his last three games. Senior forward Ian Hummer continues his climb up the school and League career lists as he became just the fourth Tiger all-time to reach the 1,500-point plateau. Hummer enters the weekend with 1,501 career points and needs just 50 more points to grab sole possession of second place in storied history of Princeton men's basketball.
The League's hottest team has been the Big Red, winner of its last three games. During the winning streak, Head coach Bill Courtney has seen solid offensive production from four players in particular --- sophomore forward Shonn Miller (15.3 ppg), senior guard Johnathan Gray (14.0 ppg), senior forward Errick Peck (10.0 ppg) and freshman guard Nolan Cressler (9.7 ppg). Cornell will need that productivity to continue to stay in Ivy title contention with Penn and Princeton coming to Newman Arena for the weekend.

  • The Harvard Crimson writes, "Harvard will hit the road this weekend hoping to sweep southern New England foes Brown and Yale, while Princeton will try to prevent an upset at Columbia and Cornell."
The men’s basketball team returned home after a five-game road trip, competing against Ivy foes last weekend, beating Columbia and losing to Cornell. The Bears (9-13, 3-5 Ivy) hit big shots at the end of regulation to down the Lions (10-12, 2-6) in dramatic fashion. Bruno came close to coming back against the Big Red (13-12, 5-3), but could not surmount a double-digit first-half deficit. Cedric Kuakumensah ’16 earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for his performances, scoring a career-high 19 points against Columbia and grabbing 19 rebounds against Cornell...
...Cornell 69, Brown 66
Kuakumensah continued his strong play, scoring 13 points and nabbing an impressive 19 rebounds — notching Bruno’s only double-double of the night. Finding themselves in an early hole, the Bears could not complete the comeback against the Big Red despite chances towards the end of the game. The loss snapped Bruno’s six-game home winning streak.
The Bears kept up with the Big Red for most of the second half and only trailed 24-20 after a layup from co-captain Sean McGonagill ’14. But Cornell went off on a 16-9 run that included three triples to put the Bears in a 40-29 hole at halftime.
“It’s tough to (fall behind early) two nights in a row,” Sullivan said. “We have to do better in the first half so we don’t put ourselves into that hole and have to dig out of it later.”
The Bears slowly cut into Cornell’s large lead, following their pattern from the previous night, thanks to some sharp shooting from McGonagill and buckets in the paint from Maia and Kuakumensah. Bruno came within one after Sullivan netted back-to-back threes to bring the score to 57-56.
The teams swapped buckets in the final five minutes, and a big shot from McGonagill brought the Bears within two. After a Big Red free throw, the Bears had a chance to tie with an outside attempt from Stephen Albrecht ’13, but the shot rimmed out and Bruno fell 69-66.
The Bears will host Harvard (15-7, 7-1) on Friday and Dartmouth (6-16, 2-6) on Saturday before taking a two-game road trip next weekend.
“I expect two tough games,” Sullivan said. “Both teams won some games last weekend, and I expect them to come in and play hard, so we’ll need to play well if we want to win.”
HARVARD at BROWN
The Crimson opens its weekend with a light jaunt to Providence to take on the Bears and freshman forward Cedric Kuakumensah, coming off an Ivy Rookie of the Week performance. Kuakumensah was particularly impressive in defeat against Cornell on Saturday, overwhelming the Big Red with a string of seemingly unrelated consonants and vowels on his way to 13 points, 19 rebounds, and four blocks. He may cause one or two problems for Harvard down low, but the Crimson front line is playing with confidence. It won’t take double overtime to put away Brown.
***
PENN at CORNELL
In the previous meeting between these two teams on Feb. 2, the Big Red snuck away with a two-point victory at the Palestra, with sophomore guard Galal Cancer’s jumper with 10 seconds left providing the winning tally. Even better for Cornell, the win convinced highly regarded recruits Johnny AIDS and Mike Malaria to sign on for the class of 2017. Ithaca is a dark place.
Pick: Cornell

PRINCETON at CORNELL
If you’ve had the misfortune of talking to a Cornell fan this week, you might have heard that the Big Red still have a shot at the Ivy title—“look, bro, I’m just saying, we’re only two games back,” or some variation thereof. The Ivy Basketball Twitter account compiles projections of the Ivy teams’ chances of winning the league title by simulating the rest of their seasons, given their respective places in the league standings, offensive and defensive Pomeroy ratings, and an estimation of variance. In its model, Cornell currently has a two percent chance of earning a share of the conference championship. Once the Big Red falls to the Tigers, those odds should drop to near zero, and you can tell Andy Bernard to kindly pipe down.
Pick: Princeton
  • Below, links to our recap sections from each of Cornell's games during the 2012-2013 season.
  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 22 is No. 200 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 220 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 199.  Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
