News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, news and notes for Thursday...

  • Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports analyzes the job security of coaches in the Patriot League and writes, "If you get a 1, you are as safe as it gets. If you're a 10, you might want to start looking for a new gig... Army: Zach Spiker -- It's one of the most difficult jobs in America, and the 36-year-old Spiker, a former Cornell assistant, has made progress. He finished in eighth place in his first two seasons, sixth last season and fourth this year with a 15-14 overall mark and a 8-6 record in league play. HOT SEAT INDEX: 3"
  • The EuroLeague previews today's huge game between Jeff Foote's (Cornell '10) Zalgiris club against Real Madrid of Spain.
  • The Daily Princetonian mentions Ivy Leaguers in the NBA, including Cornell alum, Bryan Colangelo ('87), the General Manager of the Toronto Raptors.
  • ESPN writes, "Here at Giant Killer Central, we have been isolating the keys to Cinderella success and boosting your early round brackets longer -- and dare we say better -- than just about anybody. We are proud to have predicted success for a series of low-seeded, unheralded teams that went on to slay Goliaths, from Cleveland State in 2009 to Cornell, Murray State and Old Dominion in 2010 to VCU and Richmond in 2011 to VCU (again) and Ohio last year."
  • The Yale Daily News raises the lack of conference tournament debate in the Ivy League and writes, "The 'The lack of a tournament ensures that the best Ivy team plays in the NCAAs!' argument: This idea is the most reasonable. 2010’s Cornell team made it to the Sweet 16, and 2011’s Princeton squad came within two points of knocking off No. 4 seed Kentucky in the first round. If a weaker team had played their way in through an Ivy League tournament, those teams would have diminished chances of pulling off the same upsets."
  • The Olean Times Herald discusses how St. Bonaventure has improved late in the season, "after putting up mostly bricks in its first three games of the season (wins over Bethune-Cookman and Cornell and a loss at Canisius), the talk was about coach Mark Schmidt’s team’s inability to score."
  • Below, links to our recap sections from each of Cornell's games during the 2012-2013 season.
  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 7 is No. 243 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 255 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 249 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Coach Spiker has to be a 1 in that index. He won COY honor at Army! He is set for several years there, at least.

Agreed. Jeff Goodman never shows too much depth or knowledge. He couldn't even find that COY tidbit to inform his research.

Sure, CBB, pointing out how dominating Julian Jacobs is while we're left picking up guards rejected by Columbia who are D III caliber isn't rubbing it in at all...

spiker would do well to consider a cornell offer. he will never win a title in patriot league but he could develop a program like his mentor mr donahue

Often times I find that lay people who demand that coaches be fired, have NEVER coached a basketball or any sports team for that matter that is competitive outside of little league. They are so easy to offer blind solutions and what should happen with no real study. They give "armchair quarterback" analysis of players all the while not ever recognizing what "true" talent at a position is. They seem to play up the players "they like" for whatever reason while minimizing proven talent on the floor. They question why some players, again those "they like," are sitting on the bench while never questioning why any of the players are on the bench. What these individuals need to do is....wait for it......BE FANS.

I want all of the sports teams at Cornell University to be successful. I too long for days of old or should I say 2008-2010 when we were on top of the league but I am also a FAN of BASKETBALL be it Cornell or other College or professional teams and I know that a Cinderella run and yes, I said it, Cinderella run of a team does not always translate into a dominant program.

Unfortunately, most kids want to go to big name schools. We can fool ourselves into believing that high level basketball players go to college for an education but let's be honest, they go for the dream of playing professionally....and not on the Jeff Foote professional level (no disrespect intended) but even Foote wants to be in the NBA. Just think about it, Jeff Foote was on that much beloved sweet 16 team and the league isn't even giving him the opportunity he so rightfully deserve.

The Ivy league suffers from a reputation of not being a good basketball league and not playing a style of basketball that translate into a professional career. Maybe Coach B is not helping you realize your "dream" of having a national champion but maybe just maybe he is advancing the "dream" of some of his players.

If it pains you so much, just stop watching but for the love of God, stop coming on this site and playing "coach."

Anon 3:04: If you think you're so much better at BEING A FAN than everyone else, why don't you get an account an teach people on the Forum how to BE A FAN.
