Brown also put a stop to a spell of losses to Cornell stretching back to 2006....
Brown at Cornell, 84-65
A strong effort by the starters allowed Brown (12-14, 6-6 Ivy) to pummel the Big Red (13-16, 5-7 Ivy) for the first time in 13 matchups. Bears center Rafael Maia proved himself in the paint with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while forward Tucker Halpern also added 22 points. While Cornell’s Nolan Cressler fought hard with 22 points, the Bears had a firm grip on the game throughout the night with a solid lead that, at its highest, reached 29 points.

Yale at Cornell, 79-70
Yale (12-17, 6-6 Ivy) dominated the Big Red from jump to buzzer. Bulldogs forwards Matt Townsend and Greg Kelley fired up the first half with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Cornell was unable to dig its way out after starting the second half with a 14-point deficit. The Big Red faced shooting woes the entire night as it managed a mere 37.1% of its field goals. A glimmer of hope came from Cornell’s bench in the form of Nolan Cressler, who provided 15 of his 19 points in the second half, but ultimately it was not enough to muzzle the Bulldogs.
  • Below, links to our recap sections from each of Cornell's games during the 2012-2013 season.
  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 5 is No. 241 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 257 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 250 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

Mike Martin pulled in another nice recruit. He's turning that program around in a hurry. Penn had a really nice class for next year. Harvard had two nice pieces, one of whom is the most highly touted commit in Ivy history.

And we are...where are we exactly? This has been a disappointing fall and spring. We have major needs that remain unfilled. What happened, exactly? I thought Cornell recruiting was "on fire."

I project we get picked 6th in next year's preseason poll, but finish 7th or 8th. We could possibly be voted above Penn and Dartmouth but they are two incredibly young teams with only 1 senior between them so they're not losing anybody and have already accomplished quite a bit despite their youth. Last place is a very, very real possibility for Cornell next year.

Come on, Cornell isn't going to finish last next season. Unless Shonn transfers. (that's a joke).

We have some nice bigs coming in. You never know with Bunce's knees, but hopefully he'll be ready to help. I'm also looking forward to David O. --- not because he's going to be the big time scorer that we need (he won't), but because, if all the reports that I've read are true, he'll bring a certain toughness and swagger that we've lacked for long stretches this season.

We badly need a three who can score to replace Peck. Three guard sets generally don't work unless you have lengthy guys who can penetrate and/or shoot the lights out. We don't have that, and I certainly don't want to see any of the guards on our roster defend Wes Saunders.

I've been very pleased with Nolan Cressler, and he should be able to hold down the 2. He needs to work on his defense, but he's a freshman and should improve.

We need a true point guard who can run an offense.

I agree with Anon 5:55 that it's been a very disappointing recruiting year after David O. committed. As is true in college recruiting, you win some, you lose some, but we certainly haven't landed any game changers that were allegedly at Homecoming. By the way, we've only heard about one -- JuJu. Where did the other alleged game changers commit?

I think it's safe to say that Cornell recruiting is definitely NOT on fire, as demonstrated by this morning's news, and all CBB spin aside.

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

There are grand total of 6 committed Ivy recruits that had at least one BCS offer at some point during their recruitment. Cornell has 2 of them. Harvard has 2, Penn has 2.

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

I believe when all is said and done, Nolan plays the 3 as a third guard (like Gray). He's more suitable for defending slower forwards than quicker quards (like Tony Hicks).

Devin Cherry is a better and more likely fit at the 2, along with Dom. While the 1 is manned by Galal and the freshmen.

Errick is a scorer and can give you energy. But ideally, at the 3 you want a high percentage/efficient scorer. We really haven't had that since Wittman. Errick is not a high percentage shooter.

Cressler is Cornell's best option to start at the 3. Not only next year, but even this weekend.

That's not a complete list of kids with BCS offers.

Hatter's coach said UH had interest; there was no mention of an offer. Those are two very different things. I don't care one way or the other, but you can't conflate the two.

Anonymous said...

Who are you counting as commits with a BCS offer?

Harvard: Edosomwan & Myers

Penn: Howard & ?

Cornell: Onuorah & ?

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

Houston offered Hatter. Courgars wanted him badly, they needed a point guard. Hatter also passed on the CAA Champions, Northeastern.

Dylan Jones of Penn also had BCS offer from new Big East (or whatever it renames itself) member Tulane.

Aram Martin (Brown) as well.

The Cornell Basketball Blog said...

Forgot about Martin. That is correct. He had late offers from Nebraska and South Florida.

It goes without saying however that there is a difference though between early BCS offers and late offers. Having one while you are a junior is different then getting offered in the spring of your senior year.

Brown is going to be terrific in this league. The fact that he can play the three and shoot will cause all sorts of matchup problems. Would have loved to see him in Cornell Red.
