News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, news and notes...

  • Cornell Basketball will host Alumni and Friends Weekend from December 6-8. Included will be a Friday evening reception, Saturday's game against Saint Francis (Pa.) and a postgame reception, then Sunday's annual alumni game. 
  • The Olean Times Herald writes that St. Bonaventure's schedule was designed to get easy wins.  the Herald writes,  "five of its 10 scheduled Division I opponents from last year finished with an RPI of 180 or lower (Southern Illinois, Buffalo, Cornell, South Dakota and Siena)."
  • Hammer and Rails suggests that Errick Peck (Cornell '13) will compete for minutes with the Boliers' Travis Carroll.

I think that I know why Harvard named as its two captains for 2013-14 one previous captain returning from his year off (Curry) and one player who had no connection to the cheating scandal.

If Harvard reinstates both Curry and Casey, that looks like they're ignoring the cheating scandal entirely -- that's not politically correct, especially on an Ivy campus. But if Harvard keeps both of them from returning as captain, that looks like Amaker is too sheepish about them having withdrawn under embarrassing circumstances. So the solution is to reinstate one of Curry or Casey and then add one player untainted with scandal, Rivard. Voila, problem solved -- well, if not solved, at least managed.

Rivard was a captain last year.

Yes, Rivard was a captain last year when four Harvard players were suspended.
