News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, news and notes for Wednesday...

  • The Ft. Wayne Journal writes, "[Purdue's Matt] Painter welcomes five new scholarship players — freshmen Bryson Scott, Stephens and Basil Smotherman along with graduate student transfers Carter and Errick Peck (Cornell). When veterans Jacob Lawson, Anthony Johnson and Sandi Marcius left the program in the spring, it made sense for Painter to bring Carter and Peck on board to give a young team additional mature voices in the locker room to go with Terone Johnson and Travis Carroll. Carter is a shooter; Peck is a lunch-pail forward who will defend, rebound, score garbage points and do whatever is asked."

All right CBB...One day to go before the official start of the college basketball season. Where's the big team news we've been waiting for?

Suspect it will go live in next 5 days, but could be longer.

I hate to bring this up, but is Bunce going to be the next Chris Vandenberg?

New Recruit? You just tweeted about it. Start naming names!

So is Wil Bathurst the gaaaame-changa new recruit?

What do you think?

No, obviously not. He is not a game changing recruit. We've only been landing mid-major, low-major, and Division III level kids after David O. committed. That's not gonna get us out of the second division.

we got him over other powerhouse programs like James Madison and Rider! awesome!

You are probably tired of hearing about Ryan, Jeff and Louis, so... please list the powerhouse programs we beat out for Shonn Miller and Nolan Cressler.

I am not saying Bathurst is a BCS level kid. But he had widespread MAAC interest which is a solid league.

We have some very highly recruited prospects still on the board. But bear in mind that this has been a bad recruiting year around the Ivy League.

Alec Brennan is the only recruit with a BCS offer.

Actually, add Andre Chatfield to the BCS list. He just committed to Harvard. Justin Gray and Chris Egi reportedly had great official visits with Chatfield and may follow him to Cambridge.

Harvard is playing a different recruiting game than we are, plain and simple.

Nobody here is tired of hearing about Ryan, Jeff, and Louis.

We do however, understand they are the exception and not the rule.

Under the radar guys who become great players are terrific, but it just doesn't happen that often.

The talent gap seemed to take a big jump this weekend when Harvard landed Andre Chatfield and Chris Egi (who by some accounts is a Top50 player, and has multiple Pac10 offers).

It's not that it is impossible for Pat Smith and Wil Bathurst to be a Louis Dale - but who do think is more likely to end up winning titles and individual honors - Smith and Bathurst, or Chatfield and Egi?
