PG Jack Gordon to Attend Cornell

Cornell received a recruiting commitment from Jack Gordon (St. Mark's School) Dallas, TX, 6-4, G.

Gordon is a 6'5" point guard.  As a senior  he was named by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) First Team All State Private Schools (all regions) and All Southwest Preparatory Conference.  During January 2015, he was  a Dallas Morning News Player of the Week.

The Cornell Basketball Blog spoke with Gordon's high school coach, Greg Guiler who described Gordon as "heady... he understands the game and makes everyone around him better."  When asked about Gordon's natural position, Guiler immediately said Gordon is a point guard and lauded his "vision on the court" and  "leadership" and referred to him as "a gamer."  Guiler noted that while Gordon does not excel in an up-tempo style, he is very effective in the half court because of his ability to see over the defense, post up small players and his deceptively quick and "crafty" first step that allows him to cut through the lane.

Guiler added, "He's a very good shooter when he gets his feet set and led us in scoring each of the last three years... He shot 43% from 3-point range."  Guiler emphasized, "he's not afraid to take the big shot, he's been clutch for us."  Besides the jump shot, Guiler said that Gordon likes to post up and developed an array of spin moves.

When asked about Gordon's needed areas for improvement, Guiler stressed that Gordon needs a collegiate level strength and conditioning program.  "He just needs to get stronger [and improve his athleticism], but he'll get that up there with those facilities [and trainers]."

On his recruitment, Guiler said Princeton and Dartmouth both pushed hard for Gordon, but Cornell assistant Dave Metzendorf successfully secured the commitment on behalf of Cornell.

As a junior, Gordon was named all conference and averaged 17.3 points per game.  He was also all conference as a sophomore during 2012-2013.  He is ranked #144 in Texas by which describes him as a, "Crafty scorer that can hit his open looks from behind the arc, runs the point and makes good decisions."  Texas Hoops also wrote, "Big guard, hard to stop when he is attacking the rim, strong body and finishes in the paint, shooter with a good stroke "

Playing with Team Triumph on the AAU circuit during the summer of 2014 at the Great American Shootout (GASO), Texas Hoops wrote, "One player from this Triumph team that needs to get some ink is 6-foot-3 combo guard Jack Gordon. More than a shooter, Gordon is a bigger point guard that takes care of it. He gets the ball up the court with his eyes up looking to make the smart pass. He has a nice shooters touch, but does a great job of being the solid point guard that Triumph needs."
